Record number: 9, Textual support number: 1 OBS

7, record 9, French, - titrage

According to... the "Standard Proctor test"... a sample of soil is dried, pulverized and separated into two fractions by a no. 4 sieve. About 6 lb of the finer fraction are moistened with a small quantity of water and thoroughly mixed to produce a damp aggregate that is then packed, in three equal layers, into a cylindrical container of specified dimensions. Each layer is compacted by 25 blows of a standard tamper that is allowed to fall from a height of 1 ft. When the cylinder has been filled and struck off level at the top, the weight and the water content of the damp soil of the container are determined. By means of these quantities, the dry density can be computed. In a similar manner the dry density is determined for successively damper mixtures of the aggregate, until the dry density after compaction decreases conspicuously with increasing water content. A curve is plotted showing the relation between dry density and water content. 3, record 11, English, - standard%20Proctor%2Dtest

6, record 11, French, - Proctor%20normal

Determination of the effective opening size, dw, FIH. The effective opening size of a geotextile, dw, is determined by wet sieving quartz sand of known composition using modified sieving equipment. The geotextile functions as a sieve.... The test sample,(diameter 18 cm), is clamped into a sieve frame. The sand, which has a dry weight of 100 g for wovens and a dry weight of 300 g for non-wovens, is then sprinkled onto the sample. The sand is then sprayed continuously with water and sieved for 15 minutes in a modified sieve machine with a vertical amplitude of 3 mm at a frequency of 50 Hz. The sand which passes through the geotextile sample is caught on a paper filter and then analyzed with [different sieves].... The effective opening size, dw, is found from the coarsest sand fraction which has passed through the test sample and in which there is still a defined quantity in relation to the original fraction. 4, record 25, English, - effective%20opening%20size

The third technique for determining the pore size distribution is based upon wet sieving. Again, there are several variations on the basic concept .... The FIH (Franzius Institut Hanover] method determines a parameter known as the "Wet Sieving Effective opening Size" (Dw), which is sometimes considered approximately equivalent to the 90% opening size .... However, as test results obtained by Heerten demonstrate this relationship is neither accurate nor consistent. 3, record 25, English, - effective%20opening%20size

In 1963, Bevan and Thoburn introduced a new concept in gas chromatographic detectors-a quantitative integral detector. These investigators made a practical gravimetric detector using an automatic-recording vacuum balance. Since the gravimetric detector integrates, a step-to-step pattern is provided instead of the usual chromatographic succession of peaks. The weight increase from each step-to-step increment is the amount of component present in that fraction and the total weight increase is the total sample weight. If absorption is complete, calibration with synthetic mixtures is not necessary. 1, record 37, English, - gravimetric%20detector

The most common reaction method is probably the carbide method of soil moisture measurement in which calcium carbide is mixed with the soil sample. Calcium carbide reacts with the moisture in the soil(...). If the mixture is placed in a tight container, the amount of water in the sample can be evaluated in terms of either the pressure-temperature increase of the gas, or the loss of weight of the sample as calculated by measuring the weight of acetylene gas produced. 1, record 49, English, - carbide%20method

2, record 49, French, - m%C3%A9thode%20au%20carbure
