The set point theory [is] arguably the most influential and debated theory of body weight control. It suggests that like temperature in a room controlled by a thermostat, body weight(or body fat) is controlled by an equivalent device(ponderostat, adipostat) residing in the hypothalamus. Borrowing from the engineering vocabulary, this device receives feedback input from the controlled parameter(room temperature, body weight or body fat), and generates an error signal in a comparator if this feedback signal is deviating from a preset reference value(set point). The error signal is used to turn up or down any mechanisms that determine the level of the controlled parameter(heat production or dissipation in the case of room temperature, metabolizable energy-in or energy lost in the case of body weight/adiposity). 4, record 1, English, - ponderostat

2, record 1, French, - pond%C3%A9rostat

Healthism is roughly the(pervasive and penetrating) ideology according to which people are socially obligated to prioritize and value health and "healthy living" over other goals and without exception... Under healthism, people are expected to modulate and discipline multiple dimensions of their life through the lens of health : we should eat healthy food, maintain a healthy weight, build healthy relationships, which in turn sustain healthy boundaries, make sure to keep a healthy attitude towards life, buy products to ensure healthy skin, safeguard healthy finances, and so forth. If we make a decision that does not maximize health in a narrow physical sense, like eating a piece of chocolate cake or skipping a workout, we are socially encouraged to justify that choice, not in terms of reasonable competing values, but in terms of our "mental health" or our need for "self-care. ... feed efficiency has been considered as one of the important parameters in assessing the potential of bird strain or feeding program, etc. In [North] America the value is calculated by dividing feed intake by weight gain, and so values of around 1. 9 are common for 42 [day] old birds. In some European countries, the efficiency is calculated as weight gain divided by feed intake, and a corresponding value would be 0. 53. Whatever system is used, measures of feed efficiency are useful in describing feed intake in relation to growth rate. Feed efficiency is, therefore, a useful measure of performance as long as all other factors affecting both growth and feed intake are either minor or do not vary from flock to flock. 2, record 6, English, - feed%20efficiency

1, record 6, French, - indice%20de%20consommation

Measurement of Heat of Combustion. In boiler practice, the heat of combustion of a fuel is the amount of heat, expressed in Btu, generated by the complete combustion(or oxidation) of a unit weight(1 pound in the United States) of fuel. Calorific value or "fuel Btu value" are other terms used... For accurate heat values of solid and liquid fuels calorimeter determinations are required. The new unit of thickness is the millimetre and the corresponding area designation for pricing and weight or area calculations is the SITA(System International Tin Plate Area) which equals 100 square metres or 4. 9426 base boxes.... The use of symbols to designate gage was displaced by the use of base weights(or basis weights) expressed in pounds per base box that also indicated the approximate thickness of the tin-mill product... With the recent introduction of the metric system(SI) in production, gage is the basic unit for specification and area becomes only a derived value for commercial usage. 2, record 22, English, - base%20box

Splitting. 1, record 24, French, - roulette%20russe

Although we can’t directly compare sedimentation constants and molecular weights it is helpful to have a rough idea of the corresponding ranges. A value of 2S will be obtained for nearly spherical proteins with molecular weights somewhat over 10, 000; long, thin molecules having sedimentation constants of 2S may have molecular weights over 50, 000. Similarly, 4S crudely corresponds to a molecular weight of 50, 000 for spherical proteins, 8S to 160, 000 and 16S to 400, 000; the molecular weights of long, thin molecules with the same sedimentation constants are several-fold greater. 3, record 25, English, - Svedberg%20unit

The dynamic amplification factor(DAF) is an important parameter in the design of highway bridges and yet no worldwide consensus has been reached so far as to its value. Some disagreement exists between provisions of various national bridge codes. This is because the DAF depends, in addition to the maximum span or the natural frequency, on many other parameters that are difficult to take into account with reasonable accuracy. Vehicle speed, weight, and dynamic characteristics, the state of the structure, roadway roughness, expansion joints, the type of bridge supports, soil-structure interaction, and influence of secondary elements are some aspects influencing the DAF. This study reviews the analytical and experimental findings on bridge dynamics and the evaluation of the DAF. 3, record 30, English, - dynamic%20amplification%20factor

Atomic weight. The nucleus of an atom is made up of neutrons and protons. The total mass of the neutrons and protons along with the electrons gives the mass of the atom.... Because this value is so small, a new unit of weight, the atomic weight unit(awu), is often used to express the weights of atoms. It is defined as 1/12 the weight of carbon atom. Carbon therefore weighs 12 awu and is the chemists’ standard of reference for atomic weights. 6, record 37, English, - atomic%20weight

Liability to capture. It was Lord Stowell who introduced in prize law the rule that forfeiture of the neutral vessel can only follow upon proof of knowledge by the shipowner of the contraband nature of the cargo. The true test of liability to capture was, in Lord Stowell' s view, the state of mind of the neutral claimant :... The Declaration of London elected to rest the principle of confiscation not on the knowledge of the owner, but on the relative proportion of contraband to the whole cargo. The ship is involved in all cases where she carries contraband goods which either in value, weight, quantity or freight exceed half of the whole cargo... 1, record 63, English, - liability%20to%20capture
