Above Ground Storage Tank. Steel above ground tanks are generally of a cylindrical design and are of welded or bolted construction. They are designed to withstand a working pressure 2 1/2 psi and a vacuum of 3/4 oz per sq in. These tanks may be mounted horizontally or vertically. Horizontally mounted tanks are cylindrical in shape with flat or dished ends and are mounted on concrete mats or saddles. Vertical tanks have flat bottoms and cone shaped roofs and are usually mounted on raised graded shale, gravel or sand beds.
