Les tufs pyroclastiques résultent de l'écoulement de fragments pyroclastiques, liquéfiés par l'eau ou par des gaz volcaniques, qui finissent souvent par constituer d'épaisses accumulations dans les vallées et les dépressions. Les matières pyroclastiques formées de cette façon peuvent être composées de «lave vive» solidifiée, de fragments de «lave inerte» issue d'éruptions antérieures, de fragments pyroclastiques également d'éruptions antérieures ou de fragments de roches arrachés aux parois du substrat lorsque les fluides volcaniques montent à la surface.

CONT

An ignimbrite is the deposit of a pyroclastic density current, or pyroclastic flow, a hot suspension of particles and gases that flows rapidly from a volcano, driven by a greater density than the surrounding atmosphere. Ignimbrites are often of dacitic or rhyolitic composition.

OBS

When coined by the New Zealand geologist P. Marshall in 1935, the term "ignimbrite" referred only to flows with emplacement temperatures high enough to cause the fragments forming the deposit to become adhered together or welded; this restriction no longer applies, and the term now includes any pyroclastic-flow deposit, welded or not.

Les ignimbrites sont des roches hétérogènes, plus ou moins compactes, parfois bréchiques, qui possèdent des vésicules vitreuses, ou fiammes, allongées dans le sens de l'écoulement. Elles résultent d'éruptions explosives d'un magma très visqueux et riche en gaz (nuées ardentes), qui peuvent recouvrir plusieurs dizaines de millions de kilomètres carrés.

If sufficiently hot when deposited, the particles in an ignimbrite may weld together, and the deposit is transformed into a "welded ignimbrite, "made of eutaxitic lapilli-tuff. When this happens, the pumice lapilli commonly flatten, and these appear on rock surfaces as dark lense-shapes, known as fiamme. Intensely welded ignimbrite may have glassy zones near the base and top, called lower and upper "vitrophyres, "but central parts are microcrystalline("lithoidal").
