A solid-state metal joining process producing high-strength, defect-free joints in metallic materials. The process employs a pin tool with a low rotational speed and applied pressure that "mechanically stirs" two parent materials together to produce a uniform weld. 3, record 2, English, - friction%20stir%20welding
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Friction stir welding uses a cylindrical, shouldered tool with a profiled pin that is rotated and slowly plunged into the joint line between two pieces of sheet or plate material, which are butted together. Frictional heat is generated between the wear resistant welding tool and the work piece. This heat causes the work piece material to soften without reaching the melting point and allows the tool to traverse the weld line. As it does, the plasticized material is transferred from the leading edge of the tool to the trailing edge of the tool shoulder and pin. It leaves a solid phase bond between the two work pieces. 2, record 2, English, - friction%20stir%20welding

3, record 2, French, - soudage%20par%20friction%2Dmalaxage

A real-time digital video-image-processing system contributes to the automation of weld-seam tracking. The tracking system makes no contact with the seam. A small television camera views the seam just ahead of the point currently being welded. The welding arc provides the illumination. Periodically, a frame grabber digitizes the video image and stores it in a computer memory as gray-scale values. The seam is located by analyzing Hough-transform arrays of derivatives of digitally-filtered image data. The information on the location and orientation of the seam is used as feedback by a welding robot to correct deviations of the electrode from the seam as welding continues. 1, record 3, English, - real%2Dtime%20digital%20video%2Dimage%2Dprocessing%20system

The conventional method for starting such a weld was to drill a pilot hole to serve as the initial keyhole, carefully align the welding torch over the pilot hole, adjust the standoff distance, and then turn on the torch at full power.... The new starting technique does not depend on precise manual alignment. The welding torch is positioned with no more than the usual care. As the torch begins to move along the weld, the welding current is gradually increased toward the full operating level, causing the depth of the weld to increase gradually until the keyhole is formed.... The standoff is controlled by the automatic-voltage-control portion of the welding equipment. At the end of a circumferential weld, the torch can continue a short distance past the starting point to overlap and thereby complete the weld in the starting transition region. 1, record 4, English, - variable%2Dpolarity%20plasma%2Darc%20keyhole%20welding

Name given to some GTAW [Gas Tungsten Arc Welding] power supplies, as the slant of the volt-ampere curve is drooping. 1, record 6, English, - drooper
Record number: 6, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The term "constant current" is obtained from the intersection point of the volt ampere curve and the welding arc voltage. If the welder maintains a constant arc length, the welding current will remain the same. Should the welder raise or lower the torch height, a new voltage intersection line is obtained. This movement of the torch raises or lowers the welding power supply output current. Notice that the curve is not straight but drooping. Because of this characteristic, the machines may also be called "droopers". 1, record 6, English, - drooper

Local exhaust ventilation is the removal of contaminated air directly at its source. This type of ventilation can help reduce worker exposure to airborne materials more effectively than general ventilation. This is because it does not allow the material to enter the work environment.
