The Motion Picture Theatre Associations of Canada is a national non-profit association for theatre owners whose purpose is to : maintain a national trade association of motion picture theatre exhibitors, consisting of owners, operators, executives and managers; to forward and promote the general welfare and prosperity of motion picture exhibitors; to gather, receive and disseminate such information as may seem helpful to members and associated organizations; to interchange ideas in rendering mutual assistance and to provide helpful vocational advice and guidance, and in general to act as a group representing national interests. Until 1996, the Canada Assistance Plan Act(CAP) provided for 50/50 federal/provincial cost-sharing of social assistance and related services. It also set some basic requirements for welfare programs.
