A pole with bucket for raising water used especially in Egypt.

Shaduf : Primitive device used to lift water from a well or stream for irrigation purposes. Essentially the device consists of a long boom balanced across a horizontal support form 8 to 10 ft(2. 4 3 m) above the ground. The beam has a long, thin end and a short, stubby end. From the long end a bucket or similar container is suspended, and on the shorter end there is a counterweight. The operator pulls on a rope that lowers the long end of the boom so that the bucket submerges and is filled with water. He then releases the rope, allowing the counterweight to raise the bucket to the desired level, and then empties the bucket and repeats the process.

Shadufs can be used in a series where it is desired to raise water to a height exceeding the range of a single one. It has been suggested that the massive stones used in building the pyramids of Egypt were raised by an ancient variant of this device.

Once containment is lost, the liquid inside the tank boils, since it is no longer under pressure, and gives the first two letters of the phenomenon-Boiling Liquid. As the liquid boils, vapour is formed. The specific volume of the vapour is much larger than that of the liquid, so there is expansion-Expanding Vapour. There is an Explosion because there is a shock wave and the container is torn apart.

So named because of their resemblance to cherries, red cherry peppers are deep orange to bright red at maturity. Nearly spherical, slender long stems hold these cherrylike beauties proudly above the foliage of the plant. Ranging from mild to fairly hot, some are quite sweet. They may be small or large and either erect or pendent. Producing smooth rich dark green leaves, this lovely plant is often grown as an ornamental, as well as for its fiery fruit. Hierarchical classification. Classifiers utilizing hierarchical, or sequential, architectures generally perform well for remote sensing applications. Typically, when discriminating land cover types, there is a benefit to separating the data into general groupings rather than specific classes, as well as to removing those classes which are easily separable from the rest. This multiscale framework in terms of class separability reduces the complexity of the classifier, both in terms of training and decision making. This is because the classifier does not need to distinguish between all classes, just one class(or a few) from the rest. By employing a hierarchical classifier, different inputs can be used at each level of the overall classification process depending on the classes to be discriminated. This then allows for a possible reduction in the number of inputs, or for the use of class specific data such as topography, at a given level. The described benefits of a hierarchical architecture generally lead to an increase in classification accuracy.... A hierarchical version of the above MRF-based classifier was developed to account for the class dependent variation in backscatter associated with changes in incidence angle. A methodology for "correcting" SAR data according to class-specific models is described and is then presented as the first level in the architecture of the hierarchical classifier.

The xenon ion propulsion system, or XIPS(pronounced "zips"), is the culmination of nearly four decades of research into the use of electric propulsion as an alternative to conventional chemical propulsion.... the increased efficiency possible with XIPS allows for a reduction in propellant mass of up to 90% for a satellite designed for 12 to 15 years operation. XIPS requires only one propellant, xenon, and does its stationkeeping job using a fraction of that required by a chemical propellant system.

Computer simulation of single-well steam assisted gravity drainage(SW-SAGD).... Steam assisted gravity drainage(SAGD) is an effective method of producing heavy oil and bitumen. In a typical SAGD approach, steam is injected into a horizontal well located directly above a horizontal producer. A steam chamber grows around the injection well and helps displace heated oil toward the production well. Single-well(SW) SAGD attempts to create a similar process using only one horizontal well. This may include steam injection from the toe of the horizontal well with production at the heel. Obvious advantages of SW-SAGD include cost savings and utility in relatively thin reservoirs. However, the process is technically challenging. To improve early-time response of SW-SAGD, it is necessary to heat the nearwellbore area to reduce oil viscosity and allow gravity drainage to take place.

Afin de limiter le nombre de puits, des ingénieurs ont proposé de réaliser l'injection de vapeur et la production de l'huile réchauffée et de l'eau due à la condensation de la vapeur, dans un unique puits horizontal. Parmi ces technologies, on pourra distinguer celle de l'entraînement à la vapeur par zone annulaire chauffée («Heated Annulus Steam Drive») et celle de drainage gravitaire renforcé par la vapeur («Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage»). La deuxième (SAGD) commence à faire ses preuves aujourd'hui. Elle permet, par l'utilisation de puits horizontaux multidrains d'améliorer considérablement la productivité et le taux de récupération des huiles en place, tout en minimisant l'utilisation de vapeur.

Thermocouple Psychrometry. A relatively modern technique for measuring water potential uses the flow of current through a small thin thermocouple(TC) to measure the water content of the vapor phase above a sample. Electrical current flows through a TC as a function of temperature, and temperature changes as water evaporates off the TC. The flux of water off the TC is determined by the amount of water in the vapor phase, which in turn, depends upon the water potential of the sample. Today, we will measure the water potential as well as the osmotic potential of some plant samples using the Decagon thermocouple psychrometer and nanovoltmeter. This device has nine sample chambers. We will fill three of the chambers with standard solutions to provide calibration of the TC, three with leaf samples, and three with crushed leaf samples(crushed to eliminate pressure potential P, leaving only osmotic potential as contributing to water potential). We will then let the samples equilibrate for 2 hours. We will need to calibrate the Decagon instrument to correct for the effect of temperature, pressure, and relative humidity on it's performance.
