A pole with bucket for raising water used especially in Egypt. 4, record 11, English, - shaduf
Record number: 11, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Shaduf : Primitive device used to lift water from a well or stream for irrigation purposes. Essentially the device consists of a long boom balanced across a horizontal support form 8 to 10 ft(2. 4 3 m) above the ground. The beam has a long, thin end and a short, stubby end. From the long end a bucket or similar container is suspended, and on the shorter end there is a counterweight. The operator pulls on a rope that lowers the long end of the boom so that the bucket submerges and is filled with water. He then releases the rope, allowing the counterweight to raise the bucket to the desired level, and then empties the bucket and repeats the process. 5, record 11, English, - shaduf

The stalk reveals a delicate ring or an annulus-like zone.... As its name indicates, this Galerina is typically autumnal. You find it during cool, wet weather, especially in October. ... a major container failure, into two or more pieces, at a moment in time when the contained liquid is at a temperature well above its boiling point at normal atmospheric pressure. A typical example is that of a propane tank engulfed in a fire.... When the metal fails, the liquid is exposed to atmospheric pressure and is well above its boiling point. Under certain conditions this results in a violent explosion. Once containment is lost, the liquid inside the tank boils, since it is no longer under pressure, and gives the first two letters of the phenomenon-Boiling Liquid. As the liquid boils, vapour is formed. The specific volume of the vapour is much larger than that of the liquid, so there is expansion-Expanding Vapour. Modern quantity surveying is concerned with the financial and economic aspects of construction. Its activities extend from the provision, for the prospective building owner, of reports on feasibility, through early stage estimates and cost-planning of the evolving design, into the preparation of bills of quantities, the obtaining and evaluation of tenders, the negotiation of contractual arrangements and the complete administration of the financial aspects of construction contracts. The common law rule that a tenant at the end of his tenancy had no claim against his landlord for any improvements or crops left on the land had an early exception in the doctrine of emblements, an exception which was well established by the reign of Edward IV. The word "emblements" means a right given by law in certain cases to the tenant of an estate of uncertain duration which has unexpectedly determined, without any fault of such tenant, to take the crops growing upon the land when his estate determines, although the estate itself has ceased. It is derived from the French "emblavence de bled"(corn sprung or put above ground), and strictly signifies the growing crops of sown land; but the doctrine of emblements extends not only to corn sown, but to roots planted and potatoes, and other annual artificial products. The growing crops of those vegetable productions of the soil which are annually produced by the labour of the cultivator are emblements.(Woodfall' s, 28th ed., 1978, p. 2044) 1, record 28, English, - doctrine%20of%20emblements

After a soft slab release, disintegration of the slab and air entrainment are very rapid and as the avalanche develops much of the mass is suspended well above ground level. As a result of the increased mean distance between snow particles in the flowing/air suspension, flow height increases, velocity increases, the avalanche assumes the form of a fluid... In some cases a large mass of the flowing snow is whirled into suspension and held above ground level by turbulence as a powder avalanche. A shot is the combination of a stroke and the situation in which it is used. 3, record 35, English, - shot
Record number: 35, Textual support number: 1 OBS
"Long" is an informal expression used to indicate that a shot went out past the baseline. Important nuance : a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i. e. the result of all of the above. Consequently, a "shot" is the result of the "stroke". "Shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. A "blow" is rather an imprecise, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" are often used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings. The Spanish term "pegada" works well as an equivalent for "shot", although technically the term more specifically refers to the actual hitting action caused by the racket coming in contact with the ball, and not to the end result [cause vs effect]. 2, record 35, English, - shot

Even in modern, well equipped stations such as Val d’Isère this method is still employed. More rarely, ski cutting is also used. Surge-blocks, swabs, or plungers are disc shaped devices made to fit tightly within the well. Their edges are usually fitted with rubber or leather rings to make a tight seal against the well casing. Pipe sections are then attached to the surge-block to lower it into the well, above the well screen, and about 15 feet below the water level. The assembly is then repeatedly lifted up and down. The up and down action of the surge-block creates suction and compression strokes that force water in and out of the well through the screened interval, gravel pack, and aquifer. It works like a plunger in the way that it removes small obstructions and sediments from the well. The surge-block is slowly lowered each time resistance begins to decrease. 2, record 53, English, - surge%20block

Methods of CO2 transport. Pipelines today operate as a mature market technology and are the most common method for transporting CO2. Gaseous CO2 is typically compressed to a pressure above 8 MPa in order to avoid two-phase flow regimes and increase the density of the CO2, thereby making it easier and less costly to transport. CO2 also can be transported as a liquid in ships, road or rail tankers that carry CO2 in insulated tanks at a temperature well below ambient, and at much lower pressures. 4, record 61, English, - CO2%20transport

[A] significant adsorptive characteristic is possessed not alone by carbons, charcoal and chars, but also by such materials as zeolite, silica, alumina, mica and some other. All these differ widely in the number and kinds of substances they adsorb, as well as in the amount of sorbed substances they will retain. In general, the silicaneous, metallic oxides and active earth types of adsorbents are electrically polar-that is, their molecular structure contains an unsymmetrical electron distribution. Since polar substances have strong attraction for one another and since water is highly polar, the polar adsorbents mentioned above retain water in preference to most other fluids and are, therefore, incapable of adsorbing non-aqueous gases efficiently from a humid atmosphere. For use in air conservation, however, which requires a sorbent to extract very small quantities of a very numerous variety of gases and vapors from either dry or humid air during a very brief interval of contact, non-polar adsorbents such as specially processed carbon of high activity, dense structure and extreme relative hardness have been found to be adequate. Activated carbon, being non-polar and hence electronically symmetrical in structure, has no particular affinity for moisture and preferentially adsorbs organic gases and vapors. 4, record 63, English, - nonpolar%20adsorbent

Hierarchical classification. Classifiers utilizing hierarchical, or sequential, architectures generally perform well for remote sensing applications. Typically, when discriminating land cover types, there is a benefit to separating the data into general groupings rather than specific classes, as well as to removing those classes which are easily separable from the rest. This multiscale framework in terms of class separability reduces the complexity of the classifier, both in terms of training and decision making. This is because the classifier does not need to distinguish between all classes, just one class(or a few) from the rest. By employing a hierarchical classifier, different inputs can be used at each level of the overall classification process depending on the classes to be discriminated. This then allows for a possible reduction in the number of inputs, or for the use of class specific data such as topography, at a given level. The described benefits of a hierarchical architecture generally lead to an increase in classification accuracy.... A hierarchical version of the above MRF-based classifier was developed to account for the class dependent variation in backscatter associated with changes in incidence angle. A methodology for "correcting" SAR data according to class-specific models is described and is then presented as the first level in the architecture of the hierarchical classifier. 3, record 64, English, - hierarchical%20classification

Much has been ... written about intelligent well technology (IWT), but not everyone agrees as to what constitutes an intelligent well (IW). Some feel that merely the use of permanent downhole gauges (PDGs) that monitor and collect wellbore and/or reservoir data, constitutes an IW. Then there are others who believe that use of simple hydraulic-controlled, remote-operated, downhole-flow-control devices with only on/off position control but no downhole monitoring, should be considered an IW. A definition accepted .... among others, is that an IW installation is one that includes all of the following capabilities: Monitoring: The ability to monitor wellbore and/or reservoir characteristics in real time; Optimization: Analyze the data from monitoring, and pro-actively adjust flow regimes from multiple zones or laterals; Flow control: Utilization of remotely operated downhole-flow-control devices ... for adjustment of flow regimes. 2, record 75, English, - intelligent%20well%20technology

The development of intelligent well technology began in the late 1980s. New downhole technology to better monitor and control production without intervention was seen as a solution to maximize the potential of aging reservoirs. Applications for permanent seismic sensing as a reservoir optimization tool grew out of conventional borehole seismic techniques that have been used for many years. 7, record 75, English, - intelligent%20well%20technology

Jetted wells, similar to drilled wells, are more common in sandy soils than in clay formations. A high-velocity stream of water is forced into the soil, then a jetting tool(point) is pushed into the loosened material to provide access for the well casing that follows. The casing of a jetted well often does not extend above the ground surface, a factor that both allows contaminants to enter the well and makes it difficult to later locate and inspect the well. 2, record 78, English, - jetted%20well

The xenon ion propulsion system, or XIPS(pronounced "zips"), is the culmination of nearly four decades of research into the use of electric propulsion as an alternative to conventional chemical propulsion.... the increased efficiency possible with XIPS allows for a reduction in propellant mass of up to 90% for a satellite designed for 12 to 15 years operation. Less propellant results in reduced cost for launch, an increase in payload, or an increase in satellite lifetime, or any combination of the above.... The on-board XIPS system is used primarily for spacecraft stationkeeping. Small thrusts are required to correct for the tug of solar or lunar gravity and to reposition the satellite in its proper orbit and altitude. A satellite's lifetime as well as its launch weight is thus determined by the amount of fuel aboard for its thruster system. While most current satellites use a chemical bipropellant propulsion system, a XIPS-equipped satellite instead uses the impulse generated by a thruster ejecting electrically charged particles at high velocities. XIPS requires only one propellant, xenon, and does its stationkeeping job using a fraction of that required by a chemical propellant system. 3, record 83, English, - xenon%20ion%20propulsion%20system

1, record 83, French, - syst%C3%A8me%20%C3%A0%20propulsion%20ionique%20au%20x%C3%A9non

The second number has a minus(-) sign in front of it. This is the calculated depth of the formation top in relation to the permanent datum, which is usually sea level. The Earth's upper atmosphere, beginning only 10-15 km above the surface, remains a frontier largely unexplored from space. The goal of upper atmosphere research is to understand the chemistry, dynamics, and energy balance above the troposphere as well as the coupling between these processes and between atmosphere regions. This implies an understanding of the mechanisms that control upper atmosphere structure and variability, as well as an understanding of how the upper atmosphere responds to natural and man-made causes. Together, these will help define the role of the upper atmosphere in climate and climate variability. The UARS [Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite] platform provides simultaneous, coordinated measurements of atmospheric internal structure(trace constituents, physical dynamics, radiative emission, thermal structure, density) and measurements of the external influences acting upon the upper atmosphere(solar radiation, tropospheric conditions, electric fields). 2, record 85, English, - Earth%27s%20upper%20atmosphere

Computer simulation of single-well steam assisted gravity drainage(SW-SAGD).... Steam assisted gravity drainage(SAGD) is an effective method of producing heavy oil and bitumen. In a typical SAGD approach, steam is injected into a horizontal well located directly above a horizontal producer. A steam chamber grows around the injection well and helps displace heated oil toward the production well. Single-well(SW) SAGD attempts to create a similar process using only one horizontal well. This may include steam injection from the toe of the horizontal well with production at the heel. Obvious advantages of SW-SAGD include cost savings and utility in relatively thin reservoirs. However, the process is technically challenging. To improve early-time response of SW-SAGD, it is necessary to heat the nearwellbore area to reduce oil viscosity and allow gravity drainage to take place. 1, record 88, English, - single%2Dwell%20steam%20assisted%20gravity%20drainage

2, record 88, French, - drainage%20gravitaire%20assist%C3%A9%20par%20injection%20de%20vapeur%20sur%20puits%20unique

Thermocouple Psychrometry. A relatively modern technique for measuring water potential uses the flow of current through a small thin thermocouple(TC) to measure the water content of the vapor phase above a sample. Electrical current flows through a TC as a function of temperature, and temperature changes as water evaporates off the TC. The flux of water off the TC is determined by the amount of water in the vapor phase, which in turn, depends upon the water potential of the sample. Today, we will measure the water potential as well as the osmotic potential of some plant samples using the Decagon thermocouple psychrometer and nanovoltmeter. This device has nine sample chambers. We will fill three of the chambers with standard solutions to provide calibration of the TC, three with leaf samples, and three with crushed leaf samples(crushed to eliminate pressure potential P, leaving only osmotic potential as contributing to water potential). We will then let the samples equilibrate for 2 hours. We will need to calibrate the Decagon instrument to correct for the effect of temperature, pressure, and relative humidity on it's performance. 3, record 95, English, - thermocouple%20psychrometer

Wind Tower. A handful still exist in most of the region's cities, sometimes on people's homes, and sometimes carefully preserved or reconstructed at museums.... Traditional wind towers rise five or six meters above a house. They are usually built of wood or stone but can also be made from canvas. The tower is open on all four sides and catches even small breezes. The breeze create a low pressure zone which will draw air up from the house causing to create natural ventilation. The towers work amazingly well. Sitting beneath a wind tower even on a hot day you will feel a consistent breeze even when the outside air feels heavy and still. 3, record 97, English, - wind%20tower
