There is an alternative between closed-and open-loop systems called standing column wells(SCWs). In a SCW, groundwater is pumped from the base of a deep well and directed to a heat exchanger.... A SCW consists of a long borehole mostly drilled in the bedrock and filled with groundwater... Typical installations use a PVC [polyvinyl chloride] pipe almost as long as the well within which a submersible pump is installed. In a conventional SCW, groundwater is pumped at the bottom of the well through a PVC pipe and returned below the dynamic level in the annular space of the borehole via a rejection pipe.... Before reinjecting the groundwater into the SCW, part of the flow rate can be diverted into a separate injection well. This process is called "bleed" and improves the system performance by attracting water from the undisturbed neighbouring ground through aquifer fractures. The bleed induces heat transfer by advection..., which improves significantly the thermal efficiency of the SCW. 2, record 1, English, - standing%20column%20well

3, record 1, French, - puits%20%C3%A0%20colonne%20permanente

An ex-vessel steam explosion may occur if the primary system is breached by hot debris. Debris in the reactor outlet piping may fail the piping and fall onto the pump room floor or debris on the reactor vessel bottom may be blocked from flowing into the outlet piping if it freezes in the effluent piping nozzle muff structure. If this occurs, the debris will heat up on the reactor vessel bottom and eventually fail the bottom shield. The likely mode of failure of the bottom shield is collapse of the shield as a whole. If it collapses, the entire shield, as well as the molten debris, will fall into the pin room below the reactor vessel. The debris will then flow across the floor into the pump room. In either event, a large portion of the reactor fuel inventory will be deposited on the pump room floor. The pump room floor will be covered with water in many scenarios. A steam explosion may result when the debris enters this water. 1, record 9, English, - ex%2Dvessel%20explosion

The best way to explain what a circular economy is, is to compare it to our current linear economy. In our current economic system, we extract resources from our planet at an ever-increasing pace, and turn them into a product that we mostly dispose after use.... A circular economy is one that is waste-free and resilient by design. It is a new economic model that is ambitious as well as practical. Designing the economy in a way that is restorative of ecosystems, ambitious with its innovation, and impactful for society, is a bold challenge but one that is achievable when guided by the below principles of the circular economy. 1, record 14, English, - circular%20economy

Typically, each [shallow land burial] trench has a sloping floor cut into the natural soil and a French drain of gravel down one of the long sides. The trench bottom is covered with a foot or two of sand to allow water to flow freely into the French drain, especially when the trench is open during operations. Sampling pipes or tubes are placed against the trench wall, with their lower ends in the French drain, when the trench is dug. Rain fell as high as 1700 m in some areas, soaking the upper snowpack. Expect a raincrust to form below this elevation as temperatures begin to cool the next few days, and then expect this to be covered with additional new snow. There are a few weak layers in this storm snow and, while warm temperatures are helping heal these weaknesses, whumpfing and cracking was still reported in the Kootenay Pass area on a north facing slope at 2100 m. For the most part new snow is sticking well to the Christmas crust buried 50-70 cm deep. This crust is providing a good bridging layer for the weak facet and surface hoar crystals below the crust, but this layer still remains a concern. 1, record 30, English, - bridging%20layer

In avalanche forecasting, a bridging layer [= une couche dure] is a layer of strong (hard) snow that is often quick thick. Once a layer gets to a certain thickness and hardness, it has enough strength to absorb the load that is applied from above, thus preventing this load from triggering a weakness underneath this "bridge." If ever the "bridge" fails then the result is normally a very large avalanche. 2, record 30, English, - bridging%20layer

The bucket pump is similar to the rag pump and lift disk pump but does not require a tube to draw the water up. It is not very common anymore, but can still be found occasionally. One advantage of this pump is that the buckets don’t turn upright until they are well below the surface of the water. They fill with clean water, and bring up less of the scum that often floats on the surface of a well. Large old sailing ships sometimes used bucket pumps. They were also used on farms and many other places. Of course, the length of the chain and the number of buckets can vary greatly. 3, record 33, English, - bucket%20pump

Surge-blocks, swabs, or plungers are disc shaped devices made to fit tightly within the well. Their edges are usually fitted with rubber or leather rings to make a tight seal against the well casing. Pipe sections are then attached to the surge-block to lower it into the well, above the well screen, and about 15 feet below the water level. The assembly is then repeatedly lifted up and down. The up and down action of the surge-block creates suction and compression strokes that force water in and out of the well through the screened interval, gravel pack, and aquifer. It works like a plunger in the way that it removes small obstructions and sediments from the well. The surge-block is slowly lowered each time resistance begins to decrease. 2, record 39, English, - surge%20block

"Glide avalanches" occur when the entire snowpack(from ground to surface) slides slowly downslope. A large crack(called a "glide crack") is formed at the top of the slope, and below this crack is where the snow is slipping down the hill. The rate of glide is variable and based on many factors(not well understood). The two biggest influences are the ground cover(smooth grass and rock slab cause glide) as well as the amount of free water at the base of the snowpack which can lubricate the sliding surface. Often these glide slabs will slip downhill for months, or most of the winter. They are very unpredictable and when they decide to release then we generally get a very large avalanche because the entire snowpack depth to the ground slides. When the glide slab finally releases-that is a "glide avalanche. "[Reference : Grant Statham, Avalanche Specialist, Parks Canada. ] 4, record 43, English, - glide%20avalanche

Methods of CO2 transport. Pipelines today operate as a mature market technology and are the most common method for transporting CO2. Gaseous CO2 is typically compressed to a pressure above 8 MPa in order to avoid two-phase flow regimes and increase the density of the CO2, thereby making it easier and less costly to transport. 3, record 48, French, - bilan%20%C3%A9nerg%C3%A9tique%20de%20la%20surface

Much has been ... written about intelligent well technology (IWT), but not everyone agrees as to what constitutes an intelligent well (IW). Some feel that merely the use of permanent downhole gauges (PDGs) that monitor and collect wellbore and/or reservoir data, constitutes an IW. Then there are others who believe that use of simple hydraulic-controlled, remote-operated, downhole-flow-control devices with only on/off position control but no downhole monitoring, should be considered an IW. A definition accepted .... among others, is that an IW installation is one that includes all of the following capabilities: Monitoring: The ability to monitor wellbore and/or reservoir characteristics in real time; Optimization: Analyze the data from monitoring, and pro-actively adjust flow regimes from multiple zones or laterals; Flow control: Utilization of remotely operated downhole-flow-control devices ... for adjustment of flow regimes. 2, record 49, English, - intelligent%20well%20technology

The development of intelligent well technology began in the late 1980s. A Superconducting Tunnel Junction(STJ-or Josephson junction) consists of two thin films of a superconducting metal such as niobium, tantalum or hafnium separated by a thin insulating layer. When operated at temperatures well below the superconductor's critical temperature(typically below 1 K), the equilibrium state of the junction is easily perturbed by any photon striking it. By applying a small bias voltage across the junction and a suitable parallel magnetic field to suppress the Josephson current, an electrical charge proportional to the energy of the perturbing photon can be extracted from the device. 1, record 51, English, - superconducting%20tunnel%20junction

The matric potential hc is negative in unsaturated soil (pores partly filled with water and partly with air), because work is needed to withdraw water against the soil matric forces. It is not essential to know these forces in detail: it suffices that hc can be measured by tensiometry or other techniques. 2, record 60, English, - tensiometry

Tensiometry... : Two kinds of devices are widely distributed on the French market :'standard’ tensiometers(porous cup linked to a depression manometer by a tube filled with water) ;and watermark sensors(electrical measure block buried in the ground and removable meter). Tensiometers measure the soil matric potential(but only below 100 kPa). A little delicate to implement, exacting to pick out(automation is desirable), nevertheless they are a good tool for controlling the irrigations(particularly drip). Nowadays they are more used by agricultural advisers than by farmers, unless the latter are well trained. 3, record 60, English, - tensiometry

Record number: 73, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Pulsed spray welding is a variation of the MIG welding process that is capable of all-position welding at higher energy levels than short circuiting arc welding. The power source provides two current levels; a steady "background" level, which is too low to produce spray transfer; and a "pulsed peak" current, which is superimposed upon the background current at a regulated interval. The pulse peak is well above the transition current, and usually one drop is transferred during each pulse. The combination of the two levels of current produces a steady arc with axial spray transfer at effective welding currents below those required for conventional spray arc welding. Because the heat input is lower, this variation in operation is capable of welding thinner sections than are practical with the conventional spray transfer. 3, record 73, English, - pulsed%20spray%20welding

Heating DNA molecules to temperatures just below 100 [degrees] C breaks the hydrogen bonds holding the complementary strands together; they then quickly separate from each other(DNA denaturation). If the temperature is gradually lowered, the complementary strands again form the correct hydrogen bonds and the double-helical form is regained(renaturation of DNA). If, however, this gentle cooling is done in the presence of single-stranded RNA that has been synthesized on homologous DNA, then DNA-RNA hybrids form as well as denatured DNA double helices. These DNA-RNA hybrids are very specific and form only if some of the nucleotide sequences in the DNA are complementary to the RNA nucleotide sequences. 1, record 89, English, - renatured%20DNA

1, record 96, French, - irrigation
