Diptera that lay their eggs on the hairs, lips or nostrils of cattle, horses and other animals.

The larvae may hatch out after the eggs have been swallowed or they may bore into the skin. They develop inside the body of the victim, penetrate the tissues and eventually emerge leaving tiny holes in the skin. Hypoderma bovis, the Cattle Warble Fly is a well known enemy to the farmer and to the leather industry.

The bot fly of horses has a similar life-history but the mature larvae pass out with the faeces instead of through the skin. For this and other reasons warble flies and bot flies are sometimes classed in two different families. In some related species such as the sheep nostril fly, Oestrus ovis, the female insect deposits live larvae instead of eggs.

A small mud pit with a capacity of 10 to 15 bbl, usually with 1 bbl divisions, used exclusively to ascertain the amount of mud necessary to keep the well bore full with the exact amount of mud that is displaced by drill pipe. When the bit comes out of the hole, a volume of mud equal to that which the drill pipe occupied while in the hole must be pumped into the hole to replace the pipe. When the bit goes back in the hole, the drill pipe displaces a certain amount of mud, and a trip tank again can be used to keep track of this volume.

The exploration department at Cogema Resources ... recognized the technical difficulties and expense encountered in drilling deep vertical holes. The solution was a technique called navigational drilling (or Navi-drilling) that was used in the oil industry and, less often, in mining. ... Simply put, navi-drilling allows operators to begin drilling a new hole 500 to 600 metres below the surface by using a pre-existing "pilot hole." This significantly reduces costs as the same hole is used for up to six navi-drilling holes. A steerable motor with a rotor system turns a cutting bit. The motor is powered by hydraulic force created by the mixture of water and drilling muds pumped inside the drill string.
