There is an alternative between closed-and open-loop systems called standing column wells(SCWs). In a SCW, groundwater is pumped from the base of a deep well and directed to a heat exchanger.... A SCW consists of a long borehole mostly drilled in the bedrock and filled with groundwater... Typical installations use a PVC [polyvinyl chloride] pipe almost as long as the well within which a submersible pump is installed. In a conventional SCW, groundwater is pumped at the bottom of the well through a PVC pipe and returned below the dynamic level in the annular space of the borehole via a rejection pipe.... Before reinjecting the groundwater into the SCW, part of the flow rate can be diverted into a separate injection well. This process is called "bleed" and improves the system performance by attracting water from the undisturbed neighbouring ground through aquifer fractures. The bleed induces heat transfer by advection..., which improves significantly the thermal efficiency of the SCW.

A pole with bucket for raising water used especially in Egypt.

Shaduf : Primitive device used to lift water from a well or stream for irrigation purposes. Essentially the device consists of a long boom balanced across a horizontal support form 8 to 10 ft(2. 4 3 m) above the ground. The beam has a long, thin end and a short, stubby end. From the long end a bucket or similar container is suspended, and on the shorter end there is a counterweight. The operator pulls on a rope that lowers the long end of the boom so that the bucket submerges and is filled with water. He then releases the rope, allowing the counterweight to raise the bucket to the desired level, and then empties the bucket and repeats the process.

Shadufs can be used in a series where it is desired to raise water to a height exceeding the range of a single one. It has been suggested that the massive stones used in building the pyramids of Egypt were raised by an ancient variant of this device.

The increasing concentration of 1, 2-DCP detected in Village production wells concerned SWDO's Division of Drinking and Ground Water(DDAGW). In the summer of 1997, DDAGW requested that Ripley take action to reduce the concentration of 1, 2-DCP to below 5. 0 µg/l. Failure to do so would lead to requirements for costly treatment. The most viable option for the village was determined to be the installation of a interception well as a temporary method to capture the 1, 2-DCP plume before it reaches the well field.

A large crack(called a "glide crack") is formed at the top of the slope, and below this crack is where the snow is slipping down the hill. The two biggest influences are the ground cover(smooth grass and rock slab cause glide) as well as the amount of free water at the base of the snowpack which can lubricate the sliding surface. Often these glide slabs will slip downhill for months, or most of the winter. Extra Vehicular Activity Radiation Monitor ... The purpose of EVARM is to carry out flight experiments to investigate and characterize the doses received by different parts of an astronauts body (e.g., skin, eyes, and blood-forming organs) during an EVA. The doses will be analyzed with respect to the time and position of the EVA as well as the orbit, altitude, and attitude of the Station. A relatively new type of electronic radiation dosimeter, the Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor (MOSFET) will be used to collect dose measurements.

EVARM is designed for use with the NASA Extravehicular Mobility Unit, or spacesuit, worn by both Space Station and Space Shuttle crewmembers during Station operations. The experiment consists of a storage/badge reader unit and 12 badges-a set of three each for up to four spacewalkers. The sets are designated EV-1, EV-2, EV-3 and EV-4, corresponding to the designation of each potential spacewalker. When not in use, the badges are placed in the storage-reader box, which is stored in the Human Research Facility payload rack. The badge contains a silicon chip specially designed by Thomson-Nielsen-called a Metal Oxide Silicon Field Effect Transistor(MOSFET)-that continuously measures total radiation dosage and a connector that plugs into the badge reader. The reader that can download badge is shown placed in a pocket in the lower left leg of an astronaut liquid cooling garment. Badges also are placed in the front torso and fabric communications cap of the spacesuit undergarment(NASA/JSC). During normal operations, the Station crew will record the background radiation dosage on each badge and transmit it to the ground every week. Shortly before a spacewalk by Station or Shuttle crew members, the crew will measure the radiation dosage of each badge to be used in the spacewalk. A set of three badges will be inserted into pockets sewn into the front torso and front leg areas of the liquid cooling undergarment and the top of the fabric communications cap of each spacesuit. Those locations were selected because of the radiation hazard to sensitive soft tissues such as eyes and internal organs, as well as the hazard to the skin on the arms and legs, which are not as well shielded as the torso. Shortly after the spacewalk, the crew will plug each badge set into the badge reader. They will later transfer the data to the Human Research Facility laptop computer for transmission to the payload team on the ground.

Sprinklers can perform almost as well as drip methods when they are designed properly. Traditional high-pressure irrigation sprinklers spray water high into the air to cover as large a land area as possible. The problem is that the more time the water spends in the air, the more of it evaporates and blows off course before reaching the plants. In contrast, new low-energy sprinklers deliver water in small doses through nozzles positioned just above the ground.

The ground water in the Bidhannagar area of Calcutta has high iron content, making it rather unsuitable for domestic use as well as for drinking. In view of this unprecedented problem, the CMDA opted to provide water from an existing surface source, namely from the Tallahplata complex. Due to the distance between Tallah and Bidhannagar, it was necessary to install a pressure boosting station. It was to cater to this requirement that the Salt Lake Boosting Pumping Station came into being.

Gyroscopic principles. Any spinning object possesses gyroscopic characteristics. The central mechanism of the gyroscope is a wheel similar to a bicycle wheel. It’s outer rim has a heavy mass. It rotates at high speed on very low friction bearings. When it is rotating normally, it resists changes in direction. The gyroscope exhibits two predominant characteristics. Rigidity in space. Precession.

Hands-on experience with gyroscopes is a good way to help children understand rotational motion. Have students experiment with spinning tops on a large, hard, flat surface such as the gymnasium floor. The students should set the tops spinning and make observations about what happens when they push the spinning tops in certain directions. They can try applying force to the gyroscopes at different heights from the ground to see how this affects the movement of a spinning top. All this can be related to gyroscopic principles(such as precession and gyroscopic inertia), as well as applications of these principles(satellites, bicycles, etc.) in real life.

Le faisceau est dirigé vers une antenne de réception, composée de milliers de radiopiles. [On peut] produire de l'électricité à partir des micro-ondes en redressant les courants produits dans une antenne avec une diode à haute fréquence, qui nous donne du courant continu. L'élément combinant une antenne haute fréquence et le composant redresseur s'appelle une radiopile. Chaque radiopile ne produit qu'un peu d'électricité, mais en en associant des dizaines, des milliers, des millions, on obtient à la sortie le nombre de gigawatts demandés.

Analyses of whole or ground grain by physical methods would be better suited to handling large numbers of samples, as in protein segregation of carlots, or continuous monitoring as in loading an export cargo. Such procedures are now known and include near infrared reflectance(NIR) and near infrared transmission spectroscopy. NIR instruments have been in use for protein segregation in Canadian terminal elevators since 1975. The accuracy and precision of these instruments are equivalent to most of the standard methods of protein analysis including the Kjeldahl. NIR instruments are the most recent introduction to protein testing. They are very rapid and do not require the grain to be ground. An additional advantage of these instruments is their capacity for similarly determining moisture as well as protein. The accuracy of NIR instruments seems adequate for protein segregation.
