It is measured sometimes from the Antarctic Circle, sometimes from the northern limit of floating ice, a line varying from 47° to 61°S. (area by the latter measure: 5,700,000 square miles). Greatest sounded depth: 4,000 fathoms.

On the western shores of Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Island, damaging local winds are known as Les Suetes, derived from the word for southeast: sud est. These southeasterlies are created when a frontal inversion causes a funnelling effect over the Cape Breton mountains. As the winds rush down the side of the highlands, strong gusts develop which have been recorded to exceed 150 km/h (94 mph).

These conditions are frequently met in the United States because the long, north-south oriented mountain ranges lie perpendicular to the prevailing westerly winds and the jet stream. Mountain barriers orientated perpendicular to the flow cause the highest accelerations across the barrier and frequently generate lee waves downwind of the obstacle as well as downslope windstorms.

The prevailing winds in Sydney area are a combination of synoptic(pressure driven) flows and meso-scale(local) flows. The synoptic conditions are dominated by high pressure systems, moving air in a clockwise direction across Australia, from west to east, with an average period of six to seven days. In summer these high pressure systems are located to the south of Sydney, resulting in onshore synoptic winds. In winter these synoptic pressure systems shift north, following the movement of the sun to the northern hemisphere, resulting in westerly synoptic winds. The winter westerly winds have the greatest number of days when wind speeds exceed 40kph(Linacre, 1997).
