Upwelling is a process where cold water at the bottom of the ocean is pulled from the lower depths and is brought to the ocean surface. ... There are actually five types of upwelling being researched by oceanographers: coastal upwelling, large-scale wind-driven upwelling in the ocean interior, upwelling associated with eddies, topographically associated upwelling [and] broad-diffusive upwelling in the ocean interior. 2, record 2, English, - coastal%20upwelling

When El Niño strikes, winds, westerly water flow, and coastal upwelling remain. However, the upwelling is contained within the surface layer of warm water. 3, record 2, English, - coastal%20upwelling

1, record 2, French, - remont%C3%A9e%20d%27eau%20%C3%A0%20la%20c%C3%B4te

A flow approaching a mountain barrier will most likely go over the barrier rather than around it if the barrier is long, if the cross-barrier wind component is strong, and if the flow is unstable, near-neutral, or only weakly stable. These conditions are frequently met in the United States because the long, north-south oriented mountain ranges lie perpendicular to the prevailing westerly winds and the jet stream. Mountain barriers orientated perpendicular to the flow cause the highest accelerations across the barrier and frequently generate lee waves downwind of the obstacle as well as downslope windstorms. 1, record 3, English, - mountain%20barrier

meridional flow : In meteorology, a term meaning longitudinal or along a meridian such as northerly or southerly; opposed to zonal which is westerly or easterly. It is also an atmospheric circulation in a vertical plane oriented along a meridian. It consists, therefore, of the vertical and the meridional(north or south) components of motion only. 3, record 6, English, - meridional%20flow
