They can be a single roller as centre piece or attached as a player on the bit(mainly among the western curb bits), or a few rollers set round the mouthpiece itself(mainly in the classical riding snaffles, called "roller mouth" or "cherries"). The "Magenis snaffle" has slits in the mouthpiece into which are set the rollers.

DEF

[A] bit fitted with cheeks and a curb chain which lies in the chin groove.

CONT

An English curb bit (Weymouth) with fixed cheeks or sliding cheeks.

CONT

Operates on the leverage principle acting on the lower jaw. In a double bridle, the curb bit is used in conjunction with a bridoon, or snaffle bit.

CONT

A basic Western Curb Bit has a gently ported mouthpiece and shanks to which the reins attach... In the English Curb Bit the port can also vary in severity. In general the shanks on English bits are shorter than on Western bits-four to five inches on an English bit as opposed to up to eight or nine inches on a Western one.

PHR

DEF

CONT

Types of American Curb bits. A basic Western Curb Bit has a gently ported mouthpiece and shanks to which the reins attach.... Since Western horses are ridden on a loose rein, the longer shank allows the rider to utilize the leverage by giving extremely light rein aids and attaining the same result as a rider using a snaffle on a firmer contact.

CONT

Western bits. The bits used in "WESTERN" riding are extremely varied but they all have a very strong leverage effect and are therefore to use with care. The western riding is usually with "long reins" and the bit is only used by tension of the reins to restore... balance.

CONT

CONT

The Weymouth bit is quite exclusively used for dressage work. It brings a strong flexion through its leverage effect on the bars and the tongue. It is never used on its own but always with a dressage bradoon (acting upwards on the lips).

CONT

In the English Curb Bit, the port can also vary in severity. In general the shanks on English bits are shorter than on Western bits-four to five inches on an English bit as opposed to up to eight or nine inches on a Western one.

CONT

A sliding cheeked Weymouth bit with a half-twisted or reversible mouthpiece. Used as part of the bitting in a double bridle.

CONT

An English curb bit (Weymouth) with fixed cheeks or sliding cheeks.

CONT
