Based in Sidney, British Columbia, the Marine Mammal Desk is a service desk, staffed by the Canadian Coast Guard, that plays an important role in monitoring, detecting, and reporting on the presence of marine mammals along British Columbia's coast. Staffed by seven specially trained officers, Marine Mammal Desk personnel monitor for ships within the vicinity of whales seven days a week, 24 hours a day, using technologies such as radar and automatic identification systems. By reporting on this information in real-time, the Marine Mammal Desk helps ensure that ships remain distanced from designated whale protection areas, such as the Interim Sanctuary Zones implemented by Transport Canada. 1, record 5, English, - Marine%20Mammal%20Desk

The Indian art designs incorporated into their wears had as much practical application as the functionality of the items. For instance, the Lightning Snake has the head of a wolf, an animal revered for it's hunting prowess. 1, record 46, Spanish, - aceite%20de%20jojoba

This summer’s record-busting hot spell ... has aroused an extraordinary response. ... Many Americans have found themselves concerned ... about the whole bruised and abused human habitat. Briefly, "ecophobia" is an irrational (often hysterical) and groundless hatred of the natural world, or aspects of it. Such fear of the agency of Nature plays out in many spheres. The personal hygiene industry relies on it, since capital-driven notions about personal cleanliness assign us preference for perfumes (for some more than others) over natural bodily odors; the cosmetic industry (in its passion for covering up Nature’s "flaws" and "blemishes") uses it; beauticians and barbers (in their military passion for cutting back natural growths) are sustained by it; city sanitation boards display it in their demands that residents keep grass short to prevent the introduction of "vermin" and "pests" into urban areas; landscaped gardens, trimmed poodles in women’s handbags on the Seoul subway system -- anything that amputates or seeks to amputate the agency of Nature and to assert a human order on a system that follows different orders is, in essence, ecophobic. Ecophobia is a subtle thing that takes many forms. 6, record 48, English, - ecophobia

3, record 48, French, - naturophobie

The following principles should apply to Low-Impact Whale Watching : a) Whale watching activity must allow cetaceans to continue whatever behaviour they are engaged in at the time of contact. b) The goal of whale watching should not be interaction but observation of undisturbed cetacean behaviour. When cetaceans decide to interact with whale watchers, the cetaceans should always remain in control of the situation : that is, they should be free to determine the duration and nature of any interaction. c) On a long-term basis, whale watching should not lead to changes in cetacean group behaviour or dynamics, a change in habitat use, or a decline in reproductive success. 1, record 51, English, - low%2Dimpact%20whale%20watching

2, record 51, French, - observation%20%C3%A9cologique%20des%20baleines
Record number: 51, Textual support number: 2 OBS
2, record 51, French, - observation%20%C3%A9cologique%20des%20baleines

Largely in response to worries about the low abundance of blue whales in the Southern Hemisphere, particularly in view of their protection since the mid-1960s, a research programme for large baleen whales was developed by the Scientific Committee. The International Whaling Commission has subsequently approved the objectives and sequence of work suggested and has now established a major new Southern Ocean Whale and Ecosystem Research(SOWER) programme. This incorporates the continuation of a series of 18 annual whale sighting cruises circum navigating the Antarctic continent to assess the minke and other whale stocks. The programme also includes the collection of biopsy samples of skin from living whales and acoustic recording of blue whale sounds to determine stock and species identity and to improve abundance estimation techniques for rare populations. 1, record 54, English, - Southern%20Ocean%20Whale%20and%20Ecosystem%20Research

The International Whaling Commission(IWC) was set up under the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling which was signed in Washington DC on 2 December 1946. The purpose of the Convention is to provide for the proper conservation of whale stocks and thus make possible the orderly development of the whaling industry. The main duty of IWC is to keep under review and revise as necessary the measures laid down in the Schedule to the Convention which govern the conduct of whaling throughout the world. These measures, among other things, provide for the complete protection of certain species designate specified areas as whale sanctuaries; set limits on the numbers and size of whales which may be taken; prescribe open and closed seasons and areas for whaling; and prohibit the capture of suckling calves and female whales accompanied by calves. The compilation of catch reports and other statistical and biological records is also required. 2, record 55, English, - International%20Whaling%20Commission

"Cold-adapted enzymes have many potential applications, including use by the detergent industry, a $100 million market, where enzymes are in demand for cold water wash applications, "said Bruggeman. "Our research focuses on customizing the enzymes we discovered in our Phase 1 research, as well as identifying additional esterase and lipase genes which can be developed and optimized further for multiple uses. "The Phase II award will fund research in extreme cold, deep-sea environments where unique microbes have been found to dwell in the carcasses of whale skeletons. These skeletons ooze oil for up to 20 years and are encrusted with a dense microbial flora that derives energy and nutrition from the lipids found in the decaying whale. The microbes are, therefore, a source of rare cold-adapted enzymes. In Phase 1 research, Diversa scientists found that these enzymes have the capability to efficiently degrade fats and oils under laboratory conditions of extreme cold, such as in cold water wash conditions. 1, record 58, English, - cold%2Dadapted%20enzyme
