In cases in which the violent relationship between the parents involves situational couple violence or separation-instigated violence, there may not be increased risk to children in all cases, particularly if either type of violence is singular and mild. If the situational couple violence is chronic or severe, what is needed is a more nuanced analysis of the situational causes of the violence and whether it is only one or both of the parents who escalate to physical aggression. If one partner has an anger management problem, then he or she is the parent most at risk for child abuse. If the problem is one of couple communication or chronic conflict over one or several relationship issues, generalization to child abuse is unlikely. 2, record 1, English, - situational%20couple%20violence

Typically, maple syrup is finished when the syrup reaches 219°F. The long answer is that maple syrup is finished at 7°F above boiling water. In most places, water will boil at 212°F, but sometimes this number is different based on elevation and other environmental factors. So, to be more accurate, measure what temperature water boils at in your kitchen or on your propane burner, and add 7. At that temperature, your maple sap will officially be maple syrup. 2, record 5, English, - finish

Victims of neglect not more negative. In contrast, Buisman found that victims of neglect are not more negative with their offspring later in life. What she did discover was that the autonomous nervous system of these parents is more likely to be hyperreactive in a resting state and potentially stressful parenting situations. This was apparent from an increased heart rate and decreased heart rate variability. This could mean that the regulation of the autonomous nervous system is more likely to be disrupted in people who have experienced neglect in their childhood. Here too, Buisman found a link between being a victim and a perpetrator of neglect, but this appeared to be less strong than with abuse. 3, record 8, English, - perpetrator%20of%20neglect

One of the most talked about innovations in technology assisted review is continuous active learning(CAL). Understanding how this technology can be applied to document review exercises in disputes or investigations is fundamental to getting to the most relevant documents at the earliest stage whilst also keeping costs down.... CAL identifies and prioritises the documents it believes are most likely to be relevant to the matter being investigated. The system then creates a prioritised queue for review. As this manual review exercise proceeds, the review queue is continuously reshuffled and reprioritised throughout the process as the system learns more about what is relevant and adjusts its predictions accordingly. 1, record 25, English, - continuous%20active%20learning

What is a "kitchen midden?" The first human group to arrive in a new land first had to find a protected dry spot with easy access to fresh water and food resources before it could settle down. Next to the village but more or less removed from the living area, a rubbish dump developed(bones from consumed animals, shells, etc). The dump grew, generation after generation, century after century, at a rate that has been estimated very roughly at around 20 cm(8 inches) per century. The little hill soon grows big enough to provide a convenient platform for a small village at its top. With people continuing to produce refuse at the top, the hill keeps growing, but perhaps at a slower rate. 5, record 28, English, - kitchen%20midden

Viewing Distance at Computer Workstations. ... Accommodation is when the lens capsule in your eye changes shape to focus on a close object. The eyes have a default accommodation distance, called the resting point of accommodation (RPA). That is the distance at which the eyes focus when there is nothing to focus on. In total darkness our eyes are set to focus at a particular distance, so that if the lights were turned on, an object at that distance would be in clear focus. The RPA averages 30 inches for younger people and gets farther away with age. 5, record 39, English, - resting%20point%20of%20accommodation

... reading from a computer screen... Our eyes have what is called a "dark focus. "This is the point in space where your focus would be if your eyes were totally relaxed. Imagine a pitch black room. In such an environment, where you can’t see anything, your eyes are actually focusing on a fixed point in space, that is why it is called the "dark" focus. This focus is known as the Resting Point of Accommodation(RPA) and is unique to every individual, but it usually rests more than three feet away from your face(and does not depend on time of day or age). 6, record 39, English, - resting%20point%20of%20accommodation

STED [stimulated emission depletion] microscopy was the first high-resolution microscopy concept applied more widely for the study of biological questions. As performed in classical confocal laser scanning microscopy, a conventional laser beam is used to stimulate the fluorescent molecules in what is a normal excited spot(of several hundred nanometers in diameter). A second toroidal(doughnut shaped) beam is used to quench the fluorophores by stimulated emission. By overlapping the two beams, fluorescence is allowed only from the center of the spot, which thus generates a much smaller exciting focal spot... Thus, in practical terms, a smaller effective PSF [point spread function] is generated that causes less blurring and, therefore, results in higher resolution. Theoretically, the gain in resolution is not physically limited : it only depends on the power of the quenching laser beam(the higher the power, the smaller the imaging spot becomes). 1, record 48, English, - quenching%20laser%20beam

At the other end of the spectrum there is the surf-like snowskating style like longboards on snow, where you find your way through deep pow in a flow way of riding. The first snowboard was called the Snurfer which was invented around 1964. It consisted of some sort of small surfboard and a rope in front of the board to hold on too. There were no bindings present, so you could say the first snowboard was actually a snowskate. 2, record 50, English, - snowskating

What is washed or wet-processed coffee? This is coffee prepared by removing the skin and pulp from the bean while the coffee fruit is still moist. Most of the world's great coffees are processed by the wet method, which generally intensifies acidity. In the traditional wet process, the coffee skins are removed(pulping), the skinned beans are allowed to sit in tanks where enzymes loosen the sticky fruit pulp or mucilage(fermentation), after which the loosened fruit is washed off the beans(washing). In the more modern shortcut demucilage or aquapulp method, the pulp or mucilage is scrubbed from the beans by machine. 3, record 65, English, - wet%2Dprocessed%20coffee

The Period of PURPLE Crying® is the phrase used to describe the point in a baby's life when they cry more than any other time. This period of increased crying is often described as colic, but there have been many misunderstandings about what “colic” really is. The Period of PURPLE Crying® is a new way to help parents understand this time in their baby's life, which is a normal part of every infant's development. It is confusing and concerning to be told your baby “has colic” because it sounds like it is an illness or a condition that is abnormal. When the baby is given colic medicine it reinforces the idea that there is something wrong with the baby when in fact the baby is going through a very normal developmental phase. That is why we prefer to refer to this time as the Period of PURPLE Crying®. No, it is not because the baby turns purple when he/she cries but provides a meaningful and memorable way to describe what parents and their babies are going through. The Period of PURPLE Crying® begins at about 2 weeks of age and continues until about 3-4 months. 2, record 71, English, - Period%20of%20PURPLE%20Crying%C2%AE

Basically, transliteracy is concerned with what it means to be literate in the 21st century. It analyzes the relationship between people and technology, most specifically social networking, but is fluid enough to not be tied to any particular technology. It focuses more on the social uses of technology, whatever that technology may be. This terminology is new and the study of transliteracy is in the early stages, so this definition is likely to evolve. 3, record 75, English, - transliteracy

Another soil process, which is of importance to subsea pipeline engineering, is dynamic liquefaction caused either due to the passing of individual(steep) waves or due to a gradual build-up of pore pressure in the soil due to repeated cyclical forcing, such as wave motion. As a consequence of liquefaction the soil loses its bearing capacity. Hence, a negatively buoyant pipe will sink into the seabed, but what is usually worse is that a buoyant pipe can work its way out of the seabed with potentially hazardous consequences. Although dynamic liquefaction has been studied for more than 20 years, we are still some ways from formulating clear design rules, partially because it is still not clear how important this effect is in the field; the evidence is contradictory. 1, record 76, English, - dynamic%20liquefaction

Apart from the law-making process by which it was produced, the success of the Vienna Convention [on Diplomatic Relations] depended on two factors. Perhaps the more important is that at all times the real sanction of diplomatic law is reciprocity. Every State is both a sending and a receiving State. Its own representatives abroad are hostages and even on minor matters their treatment will depend on what the sending State itself accords... The second factor, to some extent the result of the first, was the very long stability of the rules of law being codified. By the time these rules were described by Vattel in Le Droit des Gens, published in 1958, they had developed as far as they ever did without the assistance of international agreements, and they remained constant thereafter. 2, record 79, English, - diplomatic%20law

The best core exercises include more than just lots of abdominal training. Although many people think of the core as a nice six-pack, or strong, toned abs, the truth is that the abdominal muscles are a very small part of the "core. "The abs have very limited and specific action, and what experts refer to as the "core" actually consists of many different muscles that stabilize the spine and pelvis, and run the entire length of the torso. When these muscles contract, they stabilize the spine, pelvis and shoulder girdle and create a solid base of support. 7, record 82, English, - core%20exercise

The term "domestic jurisdiction", as used in the theory and practice of international law, mainly since the Covenant of the League of Nations, is not a new legal concept from the point of view of its content. Indeed, it does not mean anything else or anything more than the term sovereignty in the sense of the supreme power of the State over its territory and inhabitants in the framework of international law binding upon the State. What some authors used to call "internal sovereignty" corresponds to domestic jurisdiction. Appreciative inquiry is a particular way of asking questions and envisioning the future that fosters positive relationships and builds on the basic goodness in a person, a situation, or an organization. In so doing, it enhances a system's capacity for collaboration and change... The basic idea is to build organizations around what works, rather than trying to fix what doesn’t. It is the opposite of problem solving. Instead of focusing gaps and inadequacies to find blame and remediate skills or practices, AI focuses on how to create more of the occasional exceptional performance that is occurring because a core of strengths is aligned. 1, record 89, English, - appreciative%20inquiry

Cladogenesis defines those cases of evolution in which one species develops into two or more through adaptation. The classic example is the different species unique to the Galapagos Islands, where small populations of creatures from South America evolved in response to their new ecosystem.... There is disagreement about what constitutes a new species, but it's generally agreed that if the mating of individuals from different populations cannot result in fertile and viable offspring, then they belong to different species. Cladogenesis explains the development of a large assortment of species from a smaller set of ancestral species through evolution. Unlike anagenesis, speciation through cladogenesis does not require the extinction of the ancestral population. Through successive cladogenetic splits, either with or without the extinction of the ancestral population, the total number of species increases over time. Cladogenesis is probably a more common form of evolution and speciation than anagenesis. 2, record 94, English, - cladogenesis

The word "draw-sheet"(or "draw sheet") seems to have a restricted meaning for a private tennis club. It can be the sheet on which appear the names of the participants in an upcoming tournament, listed according to previous standings or to the usual way of drawing names for such tournaments. The "draw sheet" is thus the paper sheet on which appears what is usually listed on the "draw board" of more important tournaments. 1, record 98, English, - draw%20sheet

2, record 98, French, - feuille%20de%20t%C3%AAte%20de%20s%C3%A9rie

Family Psychidae. Small, mostly stout-bodies moths...can be distinguished from other [butterflies of the same family] by the vestigial mouth parts [usually missing in butterflies, replaced by a sucking proboscis]...Psychid larvae construct portable bags, or cases, of bits of leaves and twigs, and eventually pupate in this bag.... 3, record 99, English, - bagworm%20moth

Due to the profusion of English terms possible, care must be exercised when choosing the correct English term for a given context. When reference is made to a butterfly or moth in its larval stage, then terms that include the words "worm" or "caterpillar" would be more appropriate than those that include the word "moth", which normally would imply that the insect is in its adult stage. However what complicates matters is that the female species of this family of moths does not always develop wings in adulthood. Indeed several female species retain their larval form even in adult life, hence the confusion in usage and the abundance of terms in general circulation. It is recommended however that the shortest term "bagworm" should only be used as a stylistic synonym, in cases where one would prefer not to repeat a longer term already mentioned earlier in a given text. 4, record 99, English, - bagworm%20moth

5, record 99, French, - psych%C3%A9
