Remotely acquired data using the Landsat satellite system provide a means for initiating crop growth simulation models and crop phenology models at a field level over a large geographic area. A model based on Landsat spectral data has been developed that estimates a spectral emergence of the crop at a pixel(field) level. This spectral emergence date is evaluated using dates of planting and emergence reported by farmers for their fields or spring wheat(Triticum aestivum L.) and barley(Hordeum vulare L.) located in North and South Dakota. The model can provide a means of understanding the distribution of crop emergence across all pixels of a region. This knowledge of emergence date of spring grains from satellite data provides an ability to run crop development and yield prediction models at field level. 1, record 1, English, - spectral%20emergence%20date

2, record 1, French, - date%20d%27%C3%A9mergence%20spectrale

The starting point of any breeding program is the parent material. Since the breeder cannot as yet create or modify genes to suit his requirements(this may be possible in the future by a technique called genetic engineering) he must choose parents already endowed with the genes for the qualities he wants in the new varieties. Because the new variety must be adapted into growing conditions of Western Canada, and above all, must possess milling and baking qualities characteristic of wheat grown in that area, one of the parents will usually be a typical Canadian variety. The other will be the carrier of the gene the plant breeder wishes to introduce into the Canadian variety, for example, a gene for resistance to a particular strain of stem rust. 1, record 2, English, - parent%20material

1, record 2, French, - lign%C3%A9e%20parentale

This class of wheat is grown in the Great Plains area of the U. S. which includes the states of Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, Montana, South Dakota and Wyoming. In 1981, it formed about 40% of total U. S. wheat production. The wheat is a strong type(gluten quality) and its flour produces good bread. Its average protein content is in the range of 12 to 13%; normally it has good test weight(75 to 77 kilograms per hectolitre) and is low in moisture content(11 to 12%). With proper conditioning it gives good milling results. The most prominent varieties of this group in 1981 were Newton, Larned, Eagle and Scout. Hard red winter wheat has no subclasses for grading purposes. It is assigned numerical grades but has somewhat higher(2 pounds for No. 1 and 1 pound for other grades) test weights. 1, record 4, English, - hard%20red%20winter%20wheat

Since durum wheats, as a class, are more drought resistant than bread wheats, they are better adapted to semiarid climates. It is not surprising then that durum wheats were first cultivated in the Mediterranean area. From the shores of the Mediterranean, durum wheat culture gradually spread to Southern Russia, and eventually to North and South America. Durum wheat exported from Argentina now, under the name Taganrog, probably originated from the Port of Taganrog in Southern Russia on the shores of the Black Sea. 1, record 10, English, - Taganrog

Although one of the primary aims in durum wheat milling is to produce a speck-free product, bran specks in the final product are unavoidable. If wheat is improperly cleaned, foreign material such as earth pellets or insect fragments may also appear as black specks; kernels damaged by severe smudge, mildew, black point or ergot will also cause speckiness. Since a specky product is undesirable, one test for checking the efficiency of milling is the determination of number of specks per unit area of semolina. The definition of "speck" is not clear cut and differentiation must be made between bran specks and other dark or black specks. Insufficient cleaning of wheat, presence of damaged kernels in low grade wheats, and inefficient purification contribute to speckiness. Normally, the number of specks is reported as specks per 100 square centimetres. 2, record 11, English, - specks

Criteria for judging quality. Flour color: A very simple way to determine color differences in different batches of flour is to look at the color of different types of flour under a sheet of glass. This can be done with more than one flour at a time. This method not only facilitates a comparison of the whiteness of different flours but allows for an inspection for impurities. The flour should have a ..."perfectly regular consistency and not contain any specks". This obviously does not pertain to mixed grain or to other than white flours. 3, record 11, English, - specks

(...) Although Thatcher never reached the prominence of Marquis, it retained its importance much longer than Marquis. Since 1939 Thatcher has been Canada's most important variety. In 1954, about 69% of the wheat area of Western Canada was planted to this variety. Thatcher has been replaced gradually by new varieties that are more resistant to stem rust and leaf rust. In spite of its lack of resistance to some of the new strains of rust, in 1959 it was still the main variety in Alberta and the second variety in Saskatchewan, and formed 48. 6% of the wheat area of Western Canada. 1, record 13, English, - wheat%20area

Visits to actual and potential markets are an important part of the Canadian Wheat Board's market development program. Often, market development staff accompany Wheat Board sales missions to a particular area, but some missions are organized for the sole purpose of obtaining on-the-spot knowledge in connection with a long-term market development goal. In such cases, market development teams usually represent a wide range of skills : a mission might include a cereal chemist, a market development specialist, a baking specialist or animal nutritionist, and university representatives. 2, record 14, English, - long%2Dterm%20market%20development

Each block represents a train run or railway subdivision or a group of such subdivisions on which are situated a number of shipping points within a fairly homogeneous production area. The shipping blocks are the units within which the Canadian Wheat Board allocates shipping orders among the companies operating elevators within the block. The elevator companies assign the orders to their elevator managers within each block, and this assignment governs the spotting of cars at the elevators for the loading of grain authorized by the shipping orders. 2, record 16, English, - Block%20Shipping%20System

Spring wheat area is forecast to decrease from 10. 4 Mha in 1996 to 9. 3 Mha in 1997 largely due to lower expected returns and high carry-over stocks from 1996-97. In addition, higher relative returns should cause a small shift from CWRS to CPS varieties. The bulk of the decline in wheat area is expected to shift into oilseed crops. A small increase in summerfallow is also projected, in the dark brown and brown soil zones, despite the prospect of above average spring soil moisture based on current snow cover. 2, record 19, English, - wheat%20area

World wheat area has stabilized at just over 228 million hectares. Yield per hectare has increased markedly in many countries over the past 25 years. For the United States, yield has increased by almost 60% and in China it has more than doubled. These increases are in distinct contrast to what is seen in a few other areas of the world where yields remain low. Improves soil and water management, fertilizer use, pest control, improved varieties, better choice of land, power machinery and other technological improvements have been major factors in increased yield. In recent years, yields in most countries have levelled off. In contrast, yields in India, Mexico, Pakistan and some other developing countries continue to rise. There is reason to believe that yields can be raised in nearly all countries by using modern agronomic practices based on agricultural research. 1, record 20, English, - world%20wheat%20area

1, record 20, French, - emblavures%20mondiales
