The starting point of any breeding program is the parent material. Since the breeder cannot as yet create or modify genes to suit his requirements(this may be possible in the future by a technique called genetic engineering) he must choose parents already endowed with the genes for the qualities he wants in the new varieties. Because the new variety must be adapted into growing conditions of Western Canada, and above all, must possess milling and baking qualities characteristic of wheat grown in that area, one of the parents will usually be a typical Canadian variety. The other will be the carrier of the gene the plant breeder wishes to introduce into the Canadian variety, for example, a gene for resistance to a particular strain of stem rust. 1, record 1, English, - parent%20material

1, record 1, French, - lign%C3%A9e%20parentale

The Borlaug Global Rust Initiative(BGRI) is an international consortium of over 1, 000 scientists from hundreds of institutions working together to : reduce the world's vulnerability to stem, yellow, and leaf rusts of wheat; facilitate sustainable international partnerships to contain the threat of wheat rusts; enhance world productivity to withstand global threats to wheat security.... Since its founding in 2005, the BGRI has made a significant impact on world wheat productivity. 2, record 2, English, - Borlaug%20Global%20Rust%20Initiative

(...) Although Thatcher never reached the prominence of Marquis, it retained its importance much longer than Marquis. Since 1939 Thatcher has been Canada's most important variety. In 1954, about 69% of the wheat area of Western Canada was planted to this variety. Thatcher has been replaced gradually by new varieties that are more resistant to stem rust and leaf rust. In spite of its lack of resistance to some of the new strains of rust, in 1959 it was still the main variety in Alberta and the second variety in Saskatchewan, and formed 48. 6% of the wheat area of Western Canada. 1, record 3, English, - wheat%20area

1, record 3, French, - zone%20productrice%20de%20bl%C3%A9
