In traditional applications, wheel temperature detectors are generally set to alarm for elevated wheel temperatures above a predetermined threshold. Such elevated temperatures may result from defective brake rigging or brake control valves, applied hand brakes, or various other brake system defects. In recent years, railroads have begun looking for temperatures considerably lower than the average and using existing technology to monitor wheel temperatures on trains that have the brakes applied since low wheel temperature would give an indication of an inoperative or ineffective brake. 3, record 1, English, - wheel%20temperature%20detector

Disc brakes stay much cleaner than drum brakes. A disc brake is partly shrouded by the wheel, but it is largely exposed to circulating air. Dust and dirt created by pad wear and accumulated through normal driving are thrown off by the centrifugal force of the spinning rotor. Some brake dust accumulates inside the wheel and partially on the caliper. Proper and safe cleaning of brake assemblies and components is as important for disc brakes as for drum brakes. 1, record 20, English, - brake%20dust

Some aircraft require wheel brake systems that operate with more fluid flow and higher fluid pressure than is within the capability of a simple master cylinder. In some types of aircraft, a compound master cylinder is used for this purpose. This type of master cylinder can deliver a large quantity of fluid at low pressure by means of relatively short pedal travel. It can also develop high operating pressure by means of moderate pedal pressure. This dual capability is achieved by means of two pistons : a large one for producing a large fluid flow with short travel; and a small one for developing high pressure from a lightly applied force. 3, record 28, English, - master%20cylinder

gimballed momentum wheel : Better attitude control and energy storage can be achieved by using a pair of counter-rotating micro wheels. This configuration enables micro-satellites to change their angular momentum and orientation with very little net change in stored energy. Likewise, energy can be extracted or added to a pair of wheels without changing the satellite's attitude. Power can be saved while using a regenerative brake state to decrease the speed, or this braking energy can be used to accelerate the other micro-wheel rotating in the opposite direction in a gimballed momentum wheel. Thus, it can sustain spacecraft with limited power during a short-term space mission. 2, record 31, English, - single%2Dgimballed%20momentum%20wheel

In future... all that will be necessary to engage or release the parking brake will be a brief push of a switch on the dash panel or a multifunction steering wheel. This is now made possible by either a powerful electric motor behind the scenes that tensions or releases the brake cables on command, or a further electric servomotor on the rear wheel which presses the brake caliper directly onto the brake disc. 5, record 37, English, - electric%20parking%20brake

The least desirable flow condition is one that causes spin or swirl to develop in the airstream at the fan inlet. Spin in the rotational direction of the impeller reduces the fan output and efficiency. Figure 13 illustrates the use of turning vanes to correct inlet prerotating swirl at a centrifugal fan. 6, record 38, English, - turning%20vanes
Record number: 38, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Inlet swirl, or vorticity, is a frequent cause of reduction in fan performance. If the spin is imparted in the direction of wheel rotation, a situation corresponding to the use of inlet vanes arises : the fan volume, pressure, and horsepower are lower than expected. If the air spin is counter to wheel rotation, the volume and static pressure will be greater than expected and the brake horsepower will also be greater. In either case, spin always reduces efficiency. These conditions are readily overcome by installing vanes and a splitter at the fan inlet... 3, record 38, English, - turning%20vanes

One of three kinds of rim or caliper brakes whose action originates from the side of the wheel(usually the left side), using one pivot point for two caliper arms. They are activated by means of a sheathed brake cable connected at one end to the brake lever mounted on the handlebar and at the other end to one of the caliper arms. When the hand lever is squeezed the cable retracts within its sheath, pulling the right caliper toward the rim and exerting an equal and opposite force on the cable sheath which, pressing downward, forces the left caliper toward the wheel rim, in such a way as to press rubber blocks against the rim simultaneously, stopping the bicycle through pressure and friction. 4, record 47, English, - sidepull%20brake
