WHEEL BRAKE PRESSURE [14 records]

Record 1 2017-06-08

English

Subject field(s)
  • Control Systems (Motor Vehicles)
  • Engineering Tests and Reliability
  • Braking Systems (Motor Vehicles and Bicycles)
  • Wheels and Tires (Motor Vehicles and Bicycles)
DEF

A component responsible for modulating the pressure and therefore the braking force in direct response to control signals received from the controller.

CONT

As soon as a wheel locks during braking, the logic controller sends a signal to the modulator to reduce air pressure in the brake cylinder of that wheel, thus preventing the wheel from locking up.

OBS

modulator: term and definition standardized by ISO.

OBS

modulator: term officially approved by the Lexicon Project Committee (New Brunswick).

  • Dispositifs de commande (Véhicules automobiles)
  • Fiabilité, contrôle et essais (Ingénierie)
  • Freins (Véhicules automobiles et bicyclettes)
  • Roues et pneus (Véhicules automobiles et bicyclettes)
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Aircraft Systems
DEF

The main component of a braking system consisting of the cylinder, piston and reservoir.

CONT

Some aircraft require wheel brake systems that operate with more fluid flow and higher fluid pressure than is within the capability of a simple master cylinder. In some types of aircraft, a compound master cylinder is used for this purpose. This type of master cylinder can deliver a large quantity of fluid at low pressure by means of relatively short pedal travel. It can also develop high operating pressure by means of moderate pedal pressure. This dual capability is achieved by means of two pistons : a large one for producing a large fluid flow with short travel; and a small one for developing high pressure from a lightly applied force.

OBS

The fluid is forced into the brake cylinder when braking is needed. Otherwise, it is stored when the brakes are not applied.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Circuits des aéronefs
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Cooling and Ventilating Systems
DEF

Blade or blades fitted across an air duct to divide it into a number of flows in parallel, used mainly at bends.

CONT

The least desirable flow condition is one that causes spin or swirl to develop in the airstream at the fan inlet. Spin in the rotational direction of the impeller reduces the fan output and efficiency. Figure 13 illustrates the use of turning vanes to correct inlet prerotating swirl at a centrifugal fan.

CONT

Inlet swirl, or vorticity, is a frequent cause of reduction in fan performance. If the spin is imparted in the direction of wheel rotation, a situation corresponding to the use of inlet vanes arises : the fan volume, pressure, and horsepower are lower than expected. If the air spin is counter to wheel rotation, the volume and static pressure will be greater than expected and the brake horsepower will also be greater. In either case, spin always reduces efficiency. These conditions are readily overcome by installing vanes and a splitter at the fan inlet...

OBS

The term "inlet vane" was found in OSBORNE, W.C. "Woods Practical Guide to fan Engineering, 1956, p.154.

  • Systèmes de refroidissement et de ventilation
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Cycling
DEF

One of three kinds of rim or caliper brakes whose action originates above the center of the wheel, using two pivot points, one for each caliper arm. They are activated by means of a brake cable connected at one end to the brake lever mounted on the handlebar and at the other end to a cable anchor. From the cable anchor a transverse cable runs to both sides of the brake assembly and attaches to the caliper arms. When the brake lever is squeezed, the cable retracts, lifting the cable anchor and causing both calipers to press rubber blocks against the wheel rim simultaneously, stopping the bicycle through pressure and friction.

CONT

Centerpull brakes require less lever force but more lever motion, giving them a yielding feel and requiring more accurate, and hence more frequent adjustment.

CONT

Center-pull brakes can easily be centered by squeezing the shoes and centering the brake cable where it meets the short center cable.

CONT

DEF

One of three kinds of rim or caliper brakes whose action originates from the side of the wheel(usually the left side), using one pivot point for two caliper arms. They are activated by means of a sheathed brake cable connected at one end to the brake lever mounted on the handlebar and at the other end to one of the caliper arms. When the hand lever is squeezed the cable retracts within its sheath, pulling the right caliper toward the rim and exerting an equal and opposite force on the cable sheath which, pressing downward, forces the left caliper toward the wheel rim, in such a way as to press rubber blocks against the rim simultaneously, stopping the bicycle through pressure and friction.

CONT

... the sidepull brake has a firm feel that consumes only a little finger motion when varying the finger force to change the braking force.

CONT

With side-pull brakes you have a control cable that attaches directly to one of the caliper arms, usually on the left side.
