An instrument that indicates, without actually measuring, changes in atmospheric humidity.

CONT

Usually a device in which a vegetable or animal fibre(in "Saussure's hydroscope", a human hair) which contracts with moisture, is made to move an index round a graduated scale as in the wheel barometer, or, in a familiar form, to make a small male or female figure emerge from a toy house.

When faceting, the size of the angles must be kept constant. This is done with calibers (gauges) or with measuring equipment which has been directly mounted on the dops, or with a graduated scale fixed on the American dops ... There are also magnetical calibers which adheres to the dops.

Une fois la pince réglée, il n'y a plus rien à changer à moins d'avoir à travailler des pierres fort différentes comme cela pourrait arriver en passant, par exemple, de la catégorie des 20 pierres par carat à celle des 4 pierres par carat. Dans ce dernier cas, on monte simultanément les deux pattes de la pince, mais avant de le faire, il est bon de repérer le précédent réglage pour ne pas avoir à le refaire.

Contact forces between wheels and railway track are calculated using a model in which two masses as wheels in a truck move on a elastically supported beam as rail and Hertz's contact elasticity between wheels and railway track is taken into account. The relative contact position index is proposed and it determines uniquely the ratio of the contact force of the trailing wheel to that of the leading wheel, which can be smaller or larger than unity. The mechanism of the work of the proposed index is discussed using the concept of dynamic absorber.

Measuring Pavement Roughness... The Rolling Straightedge or Profilograph type of device has been used in several areas, including California and Michigan... where there are truck mounted versions. The University of Michigan device records a continuous chart profile in each wheel track. Two sets of bogey wheels nine metres(30 ft) apart provide reference point from which vertical displacement is measured by a recording wheel at the midpoint. The cumulative vertical displacement per mile is termed the roughness index.
