Subject field(s)
  • Steering Systems (Motor Vehicles and Bicycles)
  • Road Transport
  • Road Design
CONT

The minimum turning radius of a truck is defined as the path of the outer front wheel, following a circular arc at a very low speed, and is limited by the vehicle steering mechanism.... The turning radii of a truck influences highway geometric design through consideration of offtracking and swept path width...

Subject field(s)
  • Measuring Instruments (Engineering)
  • Railroad Safety
CONT

Where hot wheel detectors are installed, the HWD scanners will be scanning trains for excessive heat caused mainly by sticking brakes. The HBD [hot box detector] computer will provide audible and visual indications of hot wheel alarm conditions.... Hot wheel detectors do not scan the bearing like the hot box detectors. The hot wheel detectors are aligned so that the scanning path is directly on the wheel about 6 inches above the rail.

Subject field(s)
  • Precision Grinding
DEF

A grinding machine that produces a plane surface.

CONT

Surface grinders. Surface grinding is accomplished by holding one or several workpieces on either a rotary or a reciprocating horizontal table and passing them through the cutting path of a rotating grinding wheel. The wheel may be mounted in either a vertical or a horizontal plane. Surface grinders are classed according to the axis of the grinding wheel as horizontal or vertical. Horizontally mounted wheels grind on their peripheries; vertically mounted wheels grind on their circular faces.

DEF

Snow or ice partly covers one or more traffic lanes but the pavement is clear almost everywhere in at least one wheel path.

OBS

One of six new terms proposed by Transports Québec in order to describe road conditions. The terminology is very simple, and will help drivers get a handle on road conditions, which are colour-coded to correspond with winter driving situations.

Key term(s)
  • partly snow-covered or partly ice-covered road

DEF

CONT

An abrasive jet uses water that is pressurized up to 40, 000 pounds per square inch(psi) and then forced through a small sapphire orifice at 2500 feet per second, or about two and a half times the speed of sound. Garnet abrasive is then pulled into this high-speed stream of water and mixed with the water in a long ceramic mixing tube. A stream of abrasive laden water moving at 1000 feet per second exits the ceramic tube. This jet of water and abrasive is then directed at the material to be machined. The jet drags the abrasive through the material in a curved path and the resulting centrifugal forces on the particles press them against the work piece. The cutting action is a grinding process where the forces and motions are provided by water, rather than a grinding wheel.

OBS

The Molecular Dynamics Sarastro 2000 has a simple light path that makes it ideal for conversion to a 2-photon scope. We retained the ability to use the microscope in the 1-photon, confocal mode by replacing mirror 2 with a beamsplitter that passes IR from the Mira 900 or reflects visible excitation from the on-board 25 mW argon-ion laser. Mirror 3 and the two scanning mirrors were replaced with broad-band mirrors for better IR throughput. We installed a plate that blocks the IR laser beam whenever the lid is opened to change filters, for safety. That is it--No more modifications necessary! To use in the 2-Photon mode, the on-board laser is turned off, the Mira 900 IR laser is turned on, the primary dichroic wheel is rotated to a 680 SP(Chroma) mirror, and the excitation filter and aperture wheels are rotated to the "open" settings. To improve rejection of excitation light, a barrier filter(680 SP, Chroma) is used in the detector housing.
