More specifically, the purpose of spending limitations in the legislation, including the prohibition on third parties’ spending, was to ensure the fairness of the electoral process, which is a corollary of the political equality of citizens. Spending limits achieve fairness in three related ways. First, they prevent the most affluent members of society from exerting a disproportionate influence by dominating the referendum debate through access to greater resources. Second, they help voters make an informed decision by preventing one voice from dominating the campaign. Third, they ensure that the campaign does not appear tainted by the influence of money. 1, record 13, English, - spending%20limits

Motonormativity is a term [that] describes a collective, largely subconscious bias towards car-based transport as the means by which people do and/or should get around. On this view, car-centricity is treated as both an "is" and an "ought" : it is simply a fact about the world(regrettable or otherwise) that we must accommodate, and/or it is a system of mobility freedom we should value and protect, or aspire to build or extend.... motonormative presumptions lead people to accept harms caused by cars that they judge unacceptable in other settings, or if caused by other means, and to temper or suspend forms of moral judgement that they apply in those other contexts. 3, record 27, English, - motonormativity

A branch point is a specific nucleotide within a pre-mRNA [pre-messenger ribonucleic acid] molecule where the splicing process occurs, allowing for the removal of introns and the joining of exons. This location is crucial for accurate splicing and influences the formation of mature mRNA [messenger ribonucleic acid], which can lead to different protein products through alternative splicing. The branch point typically contains an adenosine residue, which plays a vital role in the catalysis of the splicing reaction. 3, record 34, English, - branch%20point

Mais d'autres personnes peuvent être intéressées par le même cheval. Et, de son côté, le propriétaire peut «défendre» son cheval. Hemifusomes consist of two vesicles, which are membrane sacs filled with liquid and formed by hemifusion, meaning that the smaller of the two is fused to the larger one like a hemisphere, almost as if its other half is missing. This occurs when the outer layers of two membranes merge first while the inner membrane layers stay open until a thin connection between them forms a new vesicle. The attached vesicles are sometimes found on the outside of the organelle and sometimes on the inside, and though where exactly these vesicles originate is still unknown, hemifusomes are thought to facilitate the formation of new vesicles that transport materials throughout the cell. This is probably how they take out cellular trash. 3, record 60, English, - hemifusome

Patent trolls are... entities, including individuals and companies, that collect patents for the purpose of extracting high licensing fees from unsuspecting entrepreneurs and companies in the fields of technology and business.... A classic "trolling" situation is one in which a troll obtains a patent covering a small improvement on an existing technology and then obtains claims that seemingly encompass more than the small improvement. The troll then investigates the relevant industry and finds companies whose activities are arguably within the scope of the patent claims and then threatens the companies either to pay licensing fees or be sued for infringement. 2, record 62, English, - patent%20troll

Since the increased focus on sustainability and renewable energy, curtailment is most associated with the reduction of energy production and thus infeed from renewable sources to the grid to balance supply and demand. Vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) is a protein produced by cells in your body. VEGF produces new blood vessels when your body needs them.... Sometimes cells can produce too much VEGF. When this happens, abnormal blood vessels can grow in your eye. These abnormal blood vessels damage your eye and harm your vision. This can lead to low vision or blindness. Anti-VEGF medicine blocks VEGF, which reduces leaking abnormal blood vessels in the retina. This slows or stops damage from the abnormal blood vessels and slows down vision loss. Sometimes it can even improve vision. Ophthalmologists use anti-VEGF medicines to treat [wet] age-related macular degeneration(AMD) ;[swelling] of the retina, called macular edema; [diabetic] retinopathy; [and retinal] vein occlusion. 6, record 88, English, - anti%2Dvascular%20endothelial%20growth%20factor%20drug

The vitreoretinal interface is involved in a wide range of vitreoretinal disorders and separation of the posterior vitreous face from the retinal surface is an essential part of vitrectomy surgeries. A diverse range of enzymatic and non-enzymatic agents are being studied as an adjunct before or during vitrectomy to facilitate the induction of posterior vitreous detachment.... Agents used for pharmacologic vitreolysis can be categorized as "enzymatic" or "nonenzymatic" according to their mechanism of action. The majority of proposed agents for pharmacologic vitreolysis are enzymes which include but are not limited to tissue plasminogen activator(tPA), plasmin, microplasmin, nattokinase, chondroitinase, dispase, and hyaluronidase. When studying evolution, DNA is especially important in its application to identifying and separating organisms into species. However, DNA is a fragile molecule, and it degrades over time. For most fossil species, there is essentially no hope of ever acquiring DNA from their fossils, so answers to questions about their appearance, physiology, population structure, and more may never be fully answerable. For more recently extinct species, scientists have, and continue to, extract ancient DNA(aDNA) which they use to reconstruct the genome of long-gone ancestors and relatives. 4, record 91, English, - ancient%20deoxyribonucleic%20acid

[Endolaser] is a critical component of vitreoretinal surgery. Endolaser coagulation is a method by which the laser light is brought directly inside the eye through a fiber optic cable connected to the laser delivery console for treatment to the retina. When the surgeons is performing an intraocular surgery and a need for coagulation exists, the laser light is directed toward the desired area through a probe and photocoagulation is performed.... Endolaser probes are available in several forms such as—straight/curved, blunt/tapered, simple/aspirating, and even illuminating. The most commonly used is the straight probe with a blunt or tapered tip. The curved tip helps in accessing the anterior-superior retina or peripheral retina near the surgeon's dominant hand with ease. 3, record 92, English, - endolaser%20probe

When foveal detachment occurs in eyes with MF [myopic foveoschisis], surgery is necessary to prevent further deterioration. Vitrectomy and complete ILM peeling have been suggested to flatten the retina, but postoperative MH [macular holes] has been reported to occur in approximately 20% of cases. ILM peeling removes the Müller cone cells, which form the base of the fovea and serve as a plug that binds the photoreceptor cells in the foveola and supports the foveola structurally. The stretched retina in a highly myopic eye can easily induce a MH without this structure. To prevent postoperative MH, fovea-sparing ILM peeling was introduced. Studies have shown that this technique can prevent MH formation very effectively. A piece of ILM is preserved in the center of fovea to prevent damage to the Müller cone cells during surgery... 3, record 95, English, - fovea%2Dsparing%20internal%20limiting%20membrane%20peeling

Optic nerve sheath fenestration is an operation which is performed to reduce the swelling in the optic nerves in order to protect the eyesight. It involves a surgeon making a small window in the tough coating surrounding the optic nerve, called optic nerve sheath. This allows the fluid around the nerve to be released. The excess fluid escapes and harmlessly absorbs into surrounding tissues. This reduces the swelling in the optic nerve on the side that the procedure is performed. 3, record 96, English, - optic%20nerve%20sheath%20fenestration

Inner retinal fenestration is a newer technique [to treat optic disc pit maculopathy] based on the theory that fluid accumulates in serous detachments because the optic disc pit provides a pathway of least resistance for fluid to translocate to the subretinal space. Inner retinal fenestrations attempt to divert fluid to the vitreous cavity instead of the subretinal space. Following a PPV [pars plana vitrectomy], a 25-gauge needle is used to create a partial-thickness retinotomy radial to the optic disc pit. 2, record 98, English, - inner%20retinal%20fenestration
