The nanomotor has a positioning stroke up to some centimeters while operating with atomic resolution and thus builds a bridge over eight orders of magnitude. The nanomotor is a piezo driven linear motor consisting of a cylindrical housing and a slider with a free axial hole inside. It utilizes a piezo tube for fine positioning and a pulse wave produced by the same piezo tube for coarse movements. Every point of its stroke can be reached with a speed of up to 5 mm/s. In its free axial hole the nanomotor can transport a tip, a hose, an electrode, a hypodermic needle, a glass fiber or even a microgripper. The nanomotor is available in three different versions. The "small" nanomotor is half the size of a match stick. It can lift six times of its own mass. The dynamic force of this nanomotor is so high, that even imprints in diamond surfaces can be produced. Special versions of the nanomotor can operate in ultra high vacuum, in liquid helium, even under water or as non-magnetic drives. 3, record 18, English, - nanomotor

The United Nations Development Program(UNDP) launched the MicroStart programme in February 1997. The purpose of the programme is to build a new generation of microfinance institutions(MFIs) that have transparent track records and solid institutional and financial performance, which enable them to reach poor clients while operating on a sustainable basis. MicroStart also aims to improve the practice of microfinance within the UN system by establishing guidelines, providing technical assistance, and promoting training and learning opportunities that incorporate best practice in the field. The programme has been developed in response to demand from UNDP Country Offices for a practical and operational product to assist them in the delivery of quality programming to a well-defined niche in the evolving field of microfinance. 1, record 24, English, - MicroStart

Anesthesia forceps are a vital tool in most operating rooms because of their unique design and applications.... Designed with a pair of scissor-like arms that are pivotally connected together, anesthesia forceps have a long and narrow working surface, which helps guide surgeons through the anesthesia procedure, while maintaining good visual contact with the patient's internal structure. Some types of anesthesia forceps are designed with an alternative embodiment that provides a fourth bend near the guiding end of the forceps, which allows for easier insertion of a catheter in some patients, such as children. 1, record 33, English, - anesthesia%20forceps

Fuel in the D4D is pressurised to an extremely high 135mpa within the "common rail" that feeds all four cylinders (older diesel engines have a separate pipe leading from the pump to each cylinder). The high pressure injection creates better fuel atomisation for complete burning and increased power output. And because there is less fuel wasted through inefficient combustion, the D4D delivers better fuel economy too. 3, record 47, English, - high%20pressure%20common%20rail

A common rail engine is designed to supply constant fuel pressure to electronically controlled injectors through a shared fuel reservoir. This means that the fuel supply is not dependent on the engine revs. A common rail system is built around four basic components : a high pressure pump with pressure regulator and inlet metering valve, a rail which contains a pressurised reserve of fuel, injectors which inject precise amounts of fuel into the combustion chamber as required and a Diesel Control Unit-the ’brain’ of the system, which precisely controls injector flow and timing as well as rail pressure while continuously monitoring the operating conditions of the engine. 4, record 47, English, - high%20pressure%20common%20rail

Something that would make ecologists happy is a clean airplane. And the Ipanema, Brazil' s first totally alcohol-powered aircraft, is almost off the ground. The project has been in development for two years, under the wing of Neiva, a division of the aircraft manufacturer Embraer and Brazil' s largest agricultural aircraft manufacturer. The Ipanema does not pollute because, unlike conventionally fuelled engines, its alcohol-fuelled engine releases no lead residues into the atmosphere. However, for farmers, the real advantage is low operating cost. "Alcohol is four times less expensive than regular aviation fuel. So, while the alcohol engine consumes a little more fuel, just like automobiles, the bottom line is a savings of about 60 percent"... The alcohol-fuelled engine also boasts five percent more power. This slight advantage will allow the plane to carry extra quantities of crop-dusting products. Another advantage is that this type of engine runs cooler, giving it a longer maintenance cycle and useful life... The aircraft is still in the approval process, so the first alcohol-powered Ipanema will not fly until March 2005, after it has been completely certified. 1, record 52, English, - alcohol%20aircraft

The characteristic that distinguishes the particle-beam weapon from other directed energy weapons is the form of energy it propagates. While there are several operating concepts for particle-beam weapons, all such devices generate their destructive power by accelerating sufficient quantities of subatomic particles or atoms to velocities near the speed of light and focusing these particles into a very high-energy beam. The total energy within the beam is the aggregate energy of the rapidly moving particles, each particle having kinetic energy due to its own mass and motion. 5, record 53, English, - particle%20beam%20weapon

Today, with the rapid development of new technologies, the heritage community is being presented with new and important opportunities. The Internet, more than just another medium, is a new environment in which heritage institutions have an active role to play. In order to adapt to and lead by example in this new domain, they must develop the necessary skills and abilities while marking themselves relevant and meaningful to the world's online audiences. 2, record 54, English, - Canadian%20Heritage%20Information%20Network

2, record 54, French, - R%C3%A9seau%20canadien%20d%27information%20sur%20le%20patrimoine

The Martens Clause is indisputably one of the contemporary legal myths of the international community. Being particularly ambiguous, it has been variously interpreted. The author dismisses the more radical interpretation whereby the clause upgrades to the rank of sources of international law the "laws of humanity" and the "dictates of public conscience". The other, less extreme interpretation, whereby the clause merely serves to reject a possible a contrario argument, is equally without merit. He suggests that the clause was essentially conceived of, at the 1899 Hague Peace Conference, as diplomatic gimmick intended to break a deadlock in the negotiations between smaller and Great Powers. The clause could nevertheless be given a twofold legal significance. First, it could operate at the interpretative level : incase of doubt international rules of humanitarian law should be construed in a manner consonant with standards of humanity and the demands of public conscience. Secondly, the clause, while operating within the existing system of international sources, could serve to loosen-in relation solely to the specific field of humanitarian law-the requirements prescribed for usus whilst at the same time raising opinio to a rank higher than normarly admitted. 2, record 68, English, - Martens%20clause

What, then, about the claims for autonomy in the area of language? Chomsky has for almost thirty years insisted that syntax can be approached as a module, one operating in independence of(though, of course, interacting with) other facets of language. While many researchers have sought to follow Chomsky in this belief, it now appears that the links of syntax to other aspects of language-to lexical semantics(à la Bresnan) and to pragmatics(à la Gazdar) in particular-may be sufficiently integral that the thesis of the autonomy of syntax is in jeopardy. 1, record 82, English, - lexical%20semantics

Another development in furnace and boiler technology offers efficiency improvements of 15 to 25 per cent over the conventional furnace. This furnace is equipped with electric ignition and a built-in induced draft fan(a device that provides and ensures the escape of combustion by-products) and no draft hood. Elimination of the draft hood dramatically reduces the furnace's overall air requirement while the furnace is operating, and reduces the warm air outflow up the chimney on the off-cycle. 1, record 83, English, - induced%20draft%20furnace

Lockheed's basic concept involves an arrow-winged aircraft, to carry 290 passengers at Mach 2. 5; Boeing is considering a blended-body delta-wing configuration, capable of flying at M 2. 4 with a 270-passenger load, while McDonnell Douglas is also proposing an arrow-winged aircraft, operating(like Concorde) at Mach 2. 2, but with a 225-300 passenger load. 1, record 84, English, - arrow%2Dwinged%20aircraft

Ovens can, of course, be hand loaded with pans or straps. This arduous task is accomplished by mechanical means in nearly all large volume shops, however. The principle of operation of loading devices is relatively simple. Pans move over roller conveyors form the final steam proofer to a point in front of the relatively oven loading door. Their momentum carries them onto a series of rollers at right angles to the previous conveyor and parallel to the oven door. When a series of pans the width of the tray or hearth has collected, they are pushed into the oven. A retractable metal bar prevents additional pans from coming onto the loading platform while the pusher bar is operating. 1, record 85, English, - loading%20device
