English

Subject field(s)
  • Plant Diseases
  • Grain Growing
CONT

Bakanae is caused by the fungus Fusarium. While it is generally thought of as a seedling disease, it can be observed throughout the growing season. Infected seedlings are taller and more slender and are often visible arching above the healthy rice plants. As the season progresses, bakanae-infected plants may die before reaching maturity, or if they survive to heading, the panicles they produce are mostly empty. The fungus can over winter in the soil and residue as spores on the coat of infested seeds, leading to infected plants in the field the following season.

OBS

bakanae: A japanese word meaning "foolish seedling" used to describe the seedborne disease that causes abnormal elongation of rice plants.

CONT

The horse's winter coat is a horse's first defense from the cold. When allowed to grow, a horse's natural hair coat acts as a very effective thermal blanket, it increases both in length and density as the days grow shorter. A horse's winter coat is also naturally greasy, which helps it repel snow, ice and sleet.

Removing part or all of a horse's winter coat allows him to carry out fast work without undue distress. Clipping also allows the horse to dry more quickly; it is easier to groom the horse and spot the first sign of any injury thus helping to prevent disease. It also improves the horse's appearance.

The exact origin of the Bashkir Curly is one of the greatest mysteries of the horse world.... The modern day history of American Bashkir Curly dates to 1898, when young Peter Damele(Duh-mel' ly) and his father were riding the Peter Hanson mountain range in the remote high country of Central Nevada, near Austin. Peter, who passed away in 1981 at age 90, could vividly recall the strange sight they saw of three horses with tight curly ringlets over their entire bodies.... The Bashkir Curly transmits the curly characteristic to its offspring about fifty percent of the time, even when mated to horses without the curly coat. They also seem to be a hardy breed and able to survive severe winter conditions.

CONT

Toutes robes admises.
