WINTER DORMANCY [6 records]

Record 1 2025-12-30

English

Subject field(s)
  • Plant and Crop Production
  • Flowers and Ornamentals (Horticulture)
OBS

Many plants grown from bulbs(also those grown from corms or rhizomes) can be forced to bloom indoors during the winter by giving them the combination of cold and dark conditions that they require to break dormancy, develop roots, and flower.

OBS

forced bulb: designation extracted from the Plant Health Glossary of Terms of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Cultures (Agriculture)
  • Floriculture
DEF

Record 2 2022-03-08

English

Subject field(s)
  • Animal Reproduction
  • Fish
CONT

One advantage of spring spawning is that biological systems are coming back to life after the dormancy of winter. Fresh plankton blooms fed by spring runoff give larval fish plenty to eat so they can grow rapidly.

Record 3 2002-10-10

English

Subject field(s)
  • Plant Biology
CONT

Shorter days and falling temperatures are prompting deciduous trees and shrubs to drop leaves and prepare for winter dormancy. Limit fertilization now, as nitrogen stimulates useless late-season growth and delays dormancy.

OBS

Different plants enter dormancy during different seasons. Many carnivorous plants rest during the cold of winter by forming tightly bound hibernacula or turions---some Drosera, Pinguicula, and Utricularia are notable for this. Others, such as Sarracenia, Darlingtonia, or Dionaea(Venus Flytraps), simply stop growing or die back to a rhizome.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Biologie végétale
CONT

Record 4 2001-01-09

English

Subject field(s)
  • Meteorology
CONT

Climatic Adaptation. The red raspberry is the hardiest or most cold tolerant of the bramble or cane berries. ’Latham’ has been known to survive temperatures of-40°F. Black raspberries, or blackcaps, are adapted to more moderate winter climates. Both can be grown in northern New Mexico, but must be protected from late spring freezes after plants break winter dormancy.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Météorologie
DEF
