The Pagan holiday called Yule takes place on the day of the winter solstice, around December 21 in the northern hemisphere(below the equator, the winter solstice falls around June 21). On that day, [the] earth's axis tilts away from the sun in the Northern Hemisphere, and the sun reaches its greatest distance from the equatorial plane.... As a festival of the Sun, the most important part of any Yule celebration is light — candles, bonfires, and more. 2, record 2, English, - Yule

2, record 2, French, - Yule

Eccentricity is a measure of the circularity of the Earth's orbit around the sun. This varies from almost circular to more elliptical. The end effect is to change the distance of the sun to the earth in winter and summer(on average, the distance must remain constant). Today, the orbit is nearly circular, so that the northern hemisphere receives about the same amount of radiation in winter as in summer. In the past the orbit was more elliptical, so that there was a greater difference in summer insolation between the hemispheres. Overall, the variations in insolation are small. 3, record 8, English, - summer%20insolation
Record number: 8, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Low summer insolation is the critical factor that cools the climate enough to allow snow and ice to persist from one winter to the next. ... If summer insolation is strong, more radiation is absorbed at Earth’s surface at high latitudes. This warming accelerates ablation, melts more snow and ice, thus either prevents glaciation or shrinks existing ice sheets, and vice versa for low summer insolation. 4, record 8, English, - summer%20insolation

Polar-night jet stream. This jet meanders through the upper stratosphere over the poles. It occurs only during the long winter night. Remember, night is 6 months long over the pole in which winter is occurring. The polar stratosphere undergoes appreciable cooling due to the lack of solar radiation. The horizontal temperature gradient is strongly established between the equator and the pole, and the pressure gradient creates this westerly jet. The temperature gradient breaks down intermittently during middle and late winter in the Northern Hemisphere; therefore, the jet is intermittent at these times. Bolivia's glaciers, situated between lat 14°37’ and 18°23’ S. on the southern edge of the tropical zone of the Southern Hemisphere, are affected by the change between intertropical circulation in the summer and southeast trade winds in the winter. During the southern summer, this generally means precipitation that decreases in amount and duration from north to south. This author believes that the term "summer" is appropriate for the rainy season in Bolivia, in contrast to the central tropics of Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador, even though Schubert(1992) gives a different view. Inhabitants of these countries, however, seldom refer to summer or winter; they speak of dry and rainy seasons. 1, record 14, English, - intertropical%20circulation

The prevailing winds in Sydney area are a combination of synoptic(pressure driven) flows and meso-scale(local) flows. The synoptic conditions are dominated by high pressure systems, moving air in a clockwise direction across Australia, from west to east, with an average period of six to seven days. In summer these high pressure systems are located to the south of Sydney, resulting in onshore synoptic winds. In winter these synoptic pressure systems shift north, following the movement of the sun to the northern hemisphere, resulting in westerly synoptic winds. The winter westerly winds have the greatest number of days when wind speeds exceed 40kph(Linacre, 1997). 1, record 15, English, - synoptic%20wind

3, record 15, French, - vent%20synoptique

When arctic-origin air in winter flows southward(northward in the southern hemisphere) across(relatively) warmer seas, strong surface heating acts both to enhance the degree of instability, and trigger vigorous moist convective towers. This is sufficient alone to give rise to heavy, wintry showers/cumulonimbus clusters etc., but often marked troughing, or even a closed circulation in the isobaric flow is found; the resultant low-level convergence/positive vorticity enhancement, plus the localised concentration of the latent heat energy released, enhances development within the system, and an intense(but synoptically small) area of rain, hail, sleet or snow & squally winds can result-a polar low(or polar depression or polar meso-cyclone in some texts). 2, record 21, English, - polar%20low
