Eppley Precision Spectral Pyranometer, PSP. This instrument is considered to be the most accurate radiometer produced commercially for the measurement of global sun and sky radiation, totally or in defined wavelength bands. It can be inverted to measure reflected shortwave radiation(from which the albedo can be calculated). The PSP has a circular multi-junction thermopile of the plated(copper-constantan) wire wound type which is temperature compensated in order to get a response that is independent of ambient temperature. The temperature sensed by the detector is nearly linear with the flux density of incident radiation. The instrument is supplied with a pair of removable precision ground and polished concentric hemispheres of Schott optical glass. The inner hemisphere is transparent to a wavelength of 0. 285-2. 800 µm. The outer dome can be replaced by Schott glass hemispherical filters which transmit within specified bandwidths. Desiccant is placed in the side of the instrument to absorb humidity inside the glass domes. Measurements are reported in Wm-2.

Snow flukes(deadmen) are used as protective devices and belay anchors. These are metal plates flat angled, fitted with nylon or wire slings. Bury them in the snow or drive them in at about forty-five degrees uphill from the line of pull, with the open side of the angle toward the slope. A pull on the wire should drive the fluke deeper.

A column drier is equipped with one or more unobstructed columns through which grain falls by gravity. The columns are about 30 centimetres apart and are sheathed on either side by perforated screens or wire mesh which retain the grain but permit passage of air. On one side of each column, space is allowed for air entry and on the other side, air is discharged. Hot air passes across the column at the top of the drier, drying grain as it falls. In a similar manner, cool air passes across the bottom of the column to cool the grain. Some energy conservation has been achieved by recirculating part of the "spent" hot air which has passed through the heating section.

Welded cans are manufactured by one of two methods, wheel or wire welding. Both are variations of a forge-welding process.... Wire welding can accommodate the use of tin plate while wheel welding is best suited for tin-free steel, TFS. When using TFS, both methods require grinders to clean the edges to be welded so that they are free of oxides and chrome surface materials. Prior to side seam welding, the body blanks are formed into cylinders and tack-welded to maintain shape and proper relationship of the edges to each other.... The transmitter loop is a large rectangle, several thousand feet to the side. A long wire might also be used. The detector consists of two mutually perpendicular loops, one horizontal and one vertical, connected effectively in opposition through a transformer to amplifier and headphones.
