As replacement for traditional textbooks, "electronic schoolbags" could reduce the weight of schoolbags and expand the repository of learning resources. An "electronic schoolbag" system consists of hardware such as Personal Digital Assistant(PDA) or notebook computer together with a wireless connection to the Local Area Network(LAN) of the school and the Internet.

goReader is like an electronic schoolbag. It’s a device that stores and gives you access to your textbooks in electronic format. It weighs around 5 pounds (approximately 2 kg), and can hold around 150 textbooks, including study guides, supplementary information, etc.

Manitoba Telephone System(MTS) is partnering with the Evergreen School Division and Reston Collegiate Institute to support the Manitoba using Interactive(response) Technlogy(MANIT) pilot project. Manit will explore how Interactive Response software and wireless keypad Technology(IRT) can benefit teaching and learning. IRT supports enhanced communication between students and teachers providing a shared learning experience incorporating many of the advantages of one-on-one tutoring in a multi-student environment. Money to support the project was generated by fund raising activities of the Manitoba Chapter of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
