The United Nations Operations in Mazambique(ONUMOZ) was created in 1993 to monitor and verify cease-fire arrangements, the separation and concentration of forces, their demobilization, the collection, storage and destruction of weapons, the complete withdrawal of foreign forces, and the disbanding of private and irregular armed groups. ONUMOZ was also responsible for the authorization of security arrangements for vital infrastructures, the provision of security for UN and other international activities in support of the peace process, the monitoring of the entire electoral process and the coordination and monitoring of humanitarian assistance operations.
