Un radar météorologique en bande C comporte une antenne parabolique qui émet un faisceau d'ondes électromagnétiques dans la bande de fréquences des 5 GHz [gigahertz]. En se déplaçant dans les plans vertical et horizontal, le radar scrute l'espace environnant. Il a une portée d'environ 100 km. Les ondes émises ont la propriété de se refléter sur les gouttes de pluie, les grêlons et la neige. Leurs échos, qui correspondent à une infime partie de l'onde reçue, sont reçus par le radar qui les analyse grâce à sa grande sensibilité.
