WMTS was announced in 1997 with participation from the Government of Manitoba, NRC and WD. The objective of the Strategy was to create new opportunities for economic growth and employment by developing an integrated medical technologies cluster in Manitoba with strong links to other western locations. WMTS activity is based upon technology developed at the NRC' s Institute for Biodiagnostics in Winnipeg and in collaborations with other research centres across the west. Leading edge MRI technology has been commercialized and is being marketed by two private companies that have been deliberately formed as part of the overall commercialization objectives.

En 1997, on annonçait un nouveau partenariat entre le gouvernement du Manitoba, le CNR et DEO pour la mise sur pied de la WMTS. Cette stratégie avait pour objectif de créer de nouvelles avenues de croissance économique et de nouveaux emplois en constituant au Manitoba un regroupement de technologies médicales intégrées solidement reliées à d'autres emplacements dans l'Ouest. L'activité de la WMTS s'articule autour de la technologie mise au point à l'Institut de biodiagnostic du CNR à Winnipeg et en collaboration avec d'autres centres de recherche partout dans l'Ouest. La commercialisation de l'imagerie par résonance magnétique, une technologie de pointe, a été confiée à deux entreprises du secteur privé constituées spécifiquement dans le but d'atteindre les objectifs de commercialisation.
