The most important city of the province of Quebec, but not its capital. It occupies all the Île de Montréal (or Montréal Island), the biggest island of the Hochelaga Archipelago, at the confluence of the St. Lawrence River and the Ottawa River. In 1535, Jacques Cartier visited the native village of Hochelaga on the slope of what he named "Mont Royal," but by 1608, year of the foundation of Québec, all the Iroquoians were gone. At the same location, Ville-Marie was founded as a missionary colony by Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve in 1642, though it was not until the conclusion of the "Grande Paix" (peace treaty) of 1701 that the colony stopped living in a permanent state of war. The establishment became the great centre of the fur trade and a starting point for expeditions by the coureurs de bois and voyageurs of the time. Trade from the port and agriculture on the surrounding plains contributed to the development of the city. By the 1820s, its population outnumbered that of the city of Québec. A dynamic merchant class began to invest and "St. James Street," now "la rue Saint-Jacques," became the country’s financial centre. Around 1831, large-scale immigration enabled the population of British origin to be the majority in the city but, at the time of Confederation in 1867 and after, the francophones were again in the majority, gradually making the city the centre of the French culture in America. Erected as a municipality in 1832, the city underwent a steady growth with the addition of the territories of 35 towns over the years. If Toronto grabbed the title of "Business Capital" by the end of the 20th Century, Montréal remained the "Metropolis of Canada." In 1996, the metropolitan region grouped some 111 municipalities located on three of the islands of the Hochelaga Archipelago, Montréal Island, Jésus Island and Bizard Island, and, on the South Shore, the city of Longueuil and the seven others that were to be part of it on the 1 January 2002 ... 2, record 2, English, - Montr%C3%A9al

6, record 15, Spanish, - madre%20sustituta

For example, to the extent that society fails to recognize the power differential between two gay men in a battering relationship, it may not be able to conceptualize a killing by the battered man of his abuser as self-defense. The requirement of equal force is especially harmful to a battered man, who is likely to be perceived as more equal in strength to his male abuser than would a battered woman. The use of deadly force by him will appear irrational or vengeful if the power imbalance is ignored. 2, record 21, English, - battered%20man

The question presented in many parricide cases is the admissibility of expert testimony on battered child syndrome to aid in proving the defendant's claim of self-defense. Although battered child syndrome was originally developed as a physical diagnosis for victims of continuing child abuse, it currently includes an explanation of the psychological aspects as well. [...] One striking similarity between abused children and abused women is the failure of the child or woman to strike back at the abuser. In the case of the battered woman, this failure to strike out is attributed to learned helplessness resulting from her continued abuse. Such reasoning may readily be applied to the circumstances of the battered child as well. For a child, the feelings of lack of power or control over the situation are even greater than for a grown adult in such a situation. A child has minimal ability to leave home and permanently escape the abuse. This inability to escape results in increased fear and isolation. Often the child has been battered since a very young age and remembers no other type of existence. 3, record 22, English, - battered%20child%20syndrome

Whereas... cis and trans [are typically defined] as the presence or absence of correspondence between gender identity and gender assigned at birth,... gender modality [is defined] through 'standing in relation to’ because the all-or-nothing nature of ’correspondence’ may be too constraining for the nuances gender modality wishes to capture.... The terminology recognises the difference between, say, trans and cis women, while at the same time recognising that this difference is not one that makes trans women any less or worse women. Whereas trans and cis women have a different gender modality, they share the same gender identity :woman. Discrimination against trans people is often described as discrimination based on gender identity. However, it would be even more accurate to say it is discrimination based on gender modality, as trans people face discrimination because their gender identity doesn’t correspond to the gender they were assigned at birth... 1, record 62, English, - gender%20modality

Both parties may be mistaken as to the existence of the subject-matter. Thus in Galloway v. Galloway a separation deed between a man and a woman, who mistakenly thought that they were married to each other was held void, because it purported to deal with a marriage which did not exist. Similarly the purchase of an annuity is void if at the time of the contract the annuitant has died, so that the annuity no longer exists. 2, record 95, English, - mistake%20as%20to%20existence%20of%20subject%2Dmatter

1, record 98, French, - Princesse%20Ukok

Bog woman given a face. A 2000-year-old body... has received a makeover-coroner style. The female known as the Auning Woman, found in a northeastern Jutland bog 1886, and housed at the Museum for Culture and History in Randers, has finally got a face. Reasonably well-preserved when she popped up from the bog, the woman's 2000-year-old skull was broken into several pieces. 1, record 99, English, - bog%20woman
