The influence of the Aboriginal struggle for self-determination is a critical environmental factor for the assessment of Aboriginal federally sentenced women. For example, the recent founding of the Aboriginal Women's Caucus, with its mandate to speak on behalf of Aboriginal women in conflict with the law, can be seen as a structural articulation of the link made by Aboriginal women between self-determination and corrections. The conclusion is inescapable that if women generally are disadvantaged by social stereotypes and economic disparities, Aboriginal women suffer discrimination within discrimination through the addition of racial stereotypes. However, this conclusion has not yet been explicity incorporated within government thinking.

L'influence de la lutte des Autochtones pour l'autonomie est un élément déterminant du contexte de toute évaluation des femmes autochtones purgeant une peine fédérale. Par exemple, la création récente de l'Assemblée des femmes autochtones, chargée de parler au nom des femmes autochtones ayant des démêlés avec la justice, peut être considérée comme la concrétisation des rapports établis par les femmes autochtones entre l'autonomie et les services correctionnels. On ne peut échapper à la conclusion voulant que si les femmes en général souffrent des stéréotypes sociaux et des disparités économiques, les femmes autochtones souffrent d'une double discrimination en raison des stéréotypes raciaux. Toutefois, l'État n'a pas encore intégré implicitement cette conclusion à ses réflexions.

The Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies’ hope is to challenge and gradually break down the negative stereotypes that exist about women who come into conflict with the law. National Elizabeth Fry Week is always the week preceding Mother's Day. The majority of women who come into conflict with the law are mothers. Most of them were the sole supporters of their families at the time they were incarcerated.

L'objectif de l'Association canadienne des sociétés Elizabeth Fry consiste à sensibiliser davantage le public sur la situation des femmes aux prises avec la justice. La semaine nationale Elizabeth Fry se déroule toujours la semaine précédant la Fête des mères. La majorité des femmes ayant des démêlés avec la justice sont mères, et elles sont souvent seules pour subvenir aux besoins de leur famille. Mères condamnées à la prison, enfants condamnés à la séparation. C'est pour attirer l'attention sur cette réalité que nous terminons la semaine Elizabeth Fry le jour de la Fête des mères.
