The event became the "Air Canada Silver Broom" or simply the "Silver Broom" (or "Air Canada Silver Broom World Curling Championship," "Air Canada World Curling Championship," or "Silver Broom World Curling Championship") from 1968 to 1985, years during which the Silver Broom Trophy was given to the winner.

The Empowerment Approach. Empowerment is the most recent approach, articulated by Third World women. Its purpose is to empower women through greater self-reliance. Women's subordination is seen not only as the problem of men but also of colonial and neo-colonial oppression. Warning : the English term "favorite", as in the phrase "The Women's favorite at the French Open this year is Mary Pierce" is, unfortunately, not seen in the press in North America as often as the more ambiguous term "top-seed(ed player) ". "Top-seed" can have two distinct meanings : 1) the one player expected to win the tournament 2) a top-level player ranked high who has good chances of making it through several rounds. On the other hand, the term "top-ranked player" is at times carelessly used as a synonym for "top-seeded player" or "top seed". One is "seeded" at the tournament level(Wimbledon, the Canadian Nationals, etc.), but is "ranked"(No. 1, 2, 3, etc.) either at the respective national or international(ATP or WTA) levels, especially if there is no mention of a tournament. No. 1 seed(or... seeded No. 1)=top seed=top-seeded player. Compare with No. 1 player(in the world, according to the computer rankings). Also, be cautious of the French cognate "favori(te) ", which carries a more subjective connotation, i. e. the sweetheart of the audience. See also "top-seeded"(adjective), "darling"(="favorite"). 1, record 16, English, - top%2Dseeded%20player

After 50 years of silence, women survivors, in their 70s and 80s, came forward to demand justice and redress. One of the main outcomes of this lengthy and sustained documentation work was the Women's International War Crimes Tribunal on Japanese Military Sexual Slavery. "Women in Black" was inspired by earlier movements of women who demonstrated on the streets, making a public space for women to be heard-particularly Black Sash, in South Africa, and the Madres de la Plaza de Mayo, seeking the "disappeared" in the political repression in Argentina. But WIB also shares a genealogy with groups of women explicitly refusing violence, militarism and war, such as the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom formed in 1918, and the Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp in the UK and related groups around the world opposing the deployment of US missiles in the eighties.... Women in Black as we know it today began in 1988 in Israel.... 3, record 21, French, - Women%20in%20Black

This summer’s record-busting hot spell ... has aroused an extraordinary response. ... Many Americans have found themselves concerned ... about the whole bruised and abused human habitat. Soggy, unremitting heat sometimes seemed a symptom of general ecological collapse. ... Ecophobia, as the mood might be called, has not been induced by the hot spell alone .... The combination of heat and pollution gave a "sense of foreboding" ... [and provoked] apprehensions about ecological dangers .... Ecophobia ... is not likely to disappear ... Briefly, "ecophobia" is an irrational(often hysterical) and groundless hatred of the natural world, or aspects of it. Such fear of the agency of Nature plays out in many spheres. The personal hygiene industry relies on it, since capital-driven notions about personal cleanliness assign us preference for perfumes(for some more than others) over natural bodily odors; the cosmetic industry(in its passion for covering up Nature's "flaws" and "blemishes") uses it; beauticians and barbers(in their military passion for cutting back natural growths) are sustained by it; city sanitation boards display it in their demands that residents keep grass short to prevent the introduction of "vermin" and "pests" into urban areas; landscaped gardens, trimmed poodles in women's handbags on the Seoul subway system--anything that amputates or seeks to amputate the agency of Nature and to assert a human order on a system that follows different orders is, in essence, ecophobic. Ecophobia is a subtle thing that takes many forms. 6, record 22, English, - ecophobia

Hockey took its most important step forward in 1924 when the International Hockey Federation, the world governing body for the sport, was founded in Paris under the initiative of Frenchman, Paul Léautey. Mr. Léautey, who would become the first President of the FIH, was motivated to action following hockey's omission from the program of the 1924 Paris Games. Mr. Léautey called together representatives from seven national federations to form the sport's international governing body, the Fédération Internationale de Hockey sur Gazon... The women's game developed quickly in many countries and in 1927, the International Federation of Women's Hockey Associations(IFWHA) was formed.... After celebrating their respective Golden Jubilees-the FIH in 1974 and the IFWHA in 1980-the two organisations came together in 1982 to form the FIH. 3, record 23, English, - International%20Hockey%20Federation
