Second-generation biofuels use advanced technical processes and can be made from any lignocellulosic biomass feedstock, such as forest and crop residues, wood chips, food waste, municipal solid waste, chicken litter, straw and algae. Evidence shows that these fuels tend to offer lower full life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions than first-generation biofuels... 5, record 1, English, - second%2Dgeneration%20biofuel
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Since the main component of these biomass materials is cellulose, second-generation biofuels are also known as cellulosic fuels ... Other than cellulosic ethanol, which is the principal second-generation biofuel, biomethanol, dimethyl ether, biohydrogen, synthetic diesel and synthetic gasoline are also emerging from the ... biomass materials. 6, record 1, English, - second%2Dgeneration%20biofuel
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 OBS
There is considerable debate on how to classify biofuels. Biofuels are commonly divided into first-, second- and third-generation biofuels, but the same fuel might be classified differently depending on whether technology maturity, GHG [greenhouse gas] emission balance or the feedstock is used to guide the distinction. 7, record 1, English, - second%2Dgeneration%20biofuel

2, record 3, French, - programme%20bois%2D%C3%A9nergie

We have used biomass energy or "bioenergy"-the energy from plants and plant-derived materials-since people began burning wood to cook food and keep warm. Wood is still the largest biomass energy resource today, but other sources of biomass can also be used. These include food crops, grassy and woody plants, residues from agriculture or forestry, and the organic component of municipal and industrial wastes. Even the fumes from landfills(which are methane, a natural gas) can be used as a biomass energy source. 3, record 8, English, - bioenergy

anthracosis : A histological term describing the accumulation of black pigment in lung tissue or in other organs. In the lung the accumulation often appears as macular lesions, usually in a centrilobular location, along the walls of bronchioles, but also along interlobular septa or in the subpleural space. This pigment is mainly composed of carbonaceous material and may originate from cigarette smoke(or other smoked drugs, such as crack cocaine), atmospheric pollution, residential exposure to wood(or biomass) smoke or occupational exposure to carbon-containing dusts, such as diesel exhaust, soot, fly ash, carbon black, graphite and coal. Thus a more or less marked degree of anthracosis may be found in nonsmoking urban residents from heavily polluted areas or in inhabitants(often females) of poor countries with a cold climate(so-called ’hut lung’). Anthracosis is only rarely associated with overt pulmonary disease, except after prolonged, heavy, usually occupational exposure, when the condition is preferably labelled as a pneumoconiosis, e. g. graphite pneumoconiosis(graphitosis) or coal workers pneumoconiosis. The latter pneumoconiosis is often called anthracosilicosis(particularly in continental Europe), because this pneumoconiosis has been considered to be caused predominantly by the silica content of coal dust. While this may be true in many instances, the use of anthracosilicosis to indicate coal worker's pneumoconiosis is probably not entirely appropriate, because the pathology of coal workers pneumoconiosis is different from that of silicosis. 9, record 13, English, - coal%20workers%20pneumoconiosis

New consideration is being given to the potential utilization of surplus forest biomass as a clean and renewable alternative to fossil fuels for the generation of energy. A number of recent studies have examined the potential for the utilization of otherwise non-merchantable round wood and forest harvest residuals as feed stock for energy conversion plants... In addition to non-merchantable materials resulting from harvest activities, other sources of woody biomass could include stems taken from pre-commercial thinning in young forests and by-product residuals from forest product manufacturing operations such as shavings and saw dust. 2, record 20, English, - surplus%20forest%20biomass

Record number: 25, Textual support number: 1 OBS
anthracosis : A histological term describing the accumulation of black pigment in lung tissue or in other organs. 3, record 25, English, - anthracosis

Densified Pellet Technology. Pellets are dried ground wood or other biomass waste compressed into small cylinders about 6 mm(1/4 in.) in diameter and 25 mm(1 in.) long. The pressure and heat created during their production binds the pellets together without the need for additives. Pellet-burning appliances include a hopper to hold at least 20 kg of fuel and a screw auger to move the pellets from the hopper into the combustion chamber. Pellets usually burn cleanly because they are fed to the combustion chamber at a controlled rate and are matched with the right amount of combustion air. These appliances are generally able to operate at lower emission levels than natural firewood appliances. 2, record 30, English, - densified%20pellet

In terms of tree components, the greatest quantity of forest biomass is in the merchantable stem wood(49%), followed by branches(11%). The percentages vary somewhat among the species groups : hemlock, cedar and Douglas-fir(predominantly west coast species) have proportionally more merchantable stem wood biomass than spruce, pine, and fir; this is at least partly due to the larger average tree size. 2, record 33, English, - merchantable%20bole

In fluidized beds and suspension gasification, there is continuous relative motion of the discrete solid particles, while in fixed bed gasifiers there is much slower stratified motion of the solid bed as a whole, generally downward by gravity. The gas can then pass either in the opposite direction to the fuel(updraft or counterflow gasifiers)... or in the same direction(downdraft or coflow gasifiers).... While fixed bed coal gasifiers are updraft, biomass gasifiers can be either updraft or downdraft, depending on the purpose for which the gas is to be used. Updraft gasifiers can use very wet wood, but because the pyrolysis products are immediately cooled, the gas contains up to 30% of tar and oil. 1, record 34, English, - updraft%20gasifier

The use of biomass as a feedstock for the production of energy and chemicals has been a popular research topic over the past decade. One of the technologies receiving a great deal of attention is liquefaction in which biomass is converted to oil under high temperatures and pressures. This technology has evolved from a slow, chemical intensive process to a very rapid operation requiring little more than water. Feeling that typical reactor residence times(1-2 hours) were excessive, Beckman developed a small unit capable of reducing heat-up times to less than three minutes. Under these conditions it was found that neither a catalyst nor reducing gas was required. A mixture of only wood and water, when rapidly heated to 350°C, yielded an oil, char and gaseous and aqueous products. 1, record 35, English, - aqueous%20pyrolysis
