DEF

A mechanical friction process allowing the assembly of timber by rotating wood dowels into wood substrates without any use of adhesives.

OBS

Glueless wood welding... is very quick. The process consists in applying rapid, alternating mechanical friction to the two wood surfaces to be welded, under some pressure. The equipment for this type of work already exists as it is used to weld thermoplastics joints as used in the car industry. At the very high temperatures attained by mechanical friction(higher than 180°C) the characteristics of the wood lignin and hemicellulose between the wood cell walls change, and start to flow, hence the initial phase of "melting".

Fixed bed reactors. In fixed bed fermenters, the cells are immobilized by absorption on or entrapment in solid, non-moving solid surfaces. In one type of fixed bed fermenter, the cells are immobilized on the surfaces of immobile solid particles such as plastic blocks, concrete blocks, wood shavings or fibrous material such as plastic or glass wool. The liquid feed is either pumped through or allowed to trickle over the surface of the solids where the immobilized cells convert the substrates into products. Once steady state has been reached there will be a continuous cell loss from the solid surfaces. These types of fermenters are widely used in waste treatment and as biological filters in small aquarium water recycling systems.

DEF

A wood preservation treatment developed by Parks Canada and the Canadian Conservation Institute for waterlogged artefacts which uses polyethylene glycol and computer data to slow down and stabilize the degradation process of the cells.

CONT

The sand and gravel were carefully washed from the interior of the scoop, and the wood surface was cleaned with an ultrasonic dental scaler and soft brushes. The PEGcon method(which employs software developed jointly by Parks Canada and CCI) was used to evaluate the condition of the wood and to calculate suitable polyethylene glycol(PEG) solutions for treatment. The cleaned scoop was then soaked in PEG solution as directed by PEGcon; the wood absorbed the PEG and the cell walls were protected against shrinkage and collapse.
