[A] process that impregnates paper with an alkaline reserve to neutralize the active acid in the paper substrate and act as a buffer to neutralize acids produced in the future. 2, record 3, English, - deacidification
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The development of a viable mass deacidification process has long been considered the answer to the problems of conservation in the library field. Acid, inherent in the untreated wood pulp, introduced into the paper in the manufacturing process, or caused from contact with polluted air, breaks the links in the cellulose polymer chains causing the fibers to break down; the paper becomes discolored and brittle, losing both permanence and durability very quickly.... Deacidification does arrest the acid attack and, if adequate buffers are left in the paper, prevents it from recurring, but does not restore embrittled and discolored books to their original state. 3, record 3, English, - deacidification

Material and product design incorporating agro-based materials goes beyond applications like thatched roofs, wattle façades and other examples harking back to older days. Its goal is to use proven and new technologies and make such composites that satisfy the demanded functional specifications while containing a high degree of environmental friendliness. The first applications of agro based materials in the building industry may be found in insulation and interior decoration. The Dutch market offers insulation materials based on waste paper(including Isofloc and Isocell). Flax insulation mats are produced in the Netherlands by Eco Fiber. Hemp is another material suitable for insulation mats. Hemp is better resistant to moisture than flax. But as yet there has not been much experience with applications of this material in the building industry. The use of coconut fibers as insulation material offers several benefits such as a low energy content and high insulation value. The material is naturally highly moisture resistant. Insulation materials can be treated with halogen-free cellulose fire retardant. To preserve the material, the fibers can be treated just like wood with boric salt. Another technology is to treat cellulose fibers via the so-called PLATO(Proving Lasting Advanced Timber Option) process. This involves heating the fibers in an autoclave under 14 atmosphere pressure to about 200 degrees Celsius. In this process the lignin and the hemi-cellulose in the fiber chemically react generating a water resistant bakelite-type of resin-compound around the remaining cellulose. 2, record 5, English, - agro%2Dbased%20material

In 1980s, St. Lawrence Technologies Inc.(SLT, as a partner in the Bio-Hol joint venture) in Canada, collaborated with the Tennessee Valley Authority(TVA) in the USA and the Swedish Ethanol Development Foundation, developed a two stage hydrolysis process called the CASH process(Canada, America, Sweden Hydrolysis) at pilot plant scale for the conversion of wood feedstock to ethanol(O’Boyle et al., 1991). In the first stage of the process, TVA used the Sunds Defibrator to prehydrolyse pine wood chips under mildly acidic conditions. The pretreated material was then hydrolysed in the SLT plug flow reactor to convert cellulose to glucose. The yield of the conversion from cellulose to glucose exceeded 50%, which was close to the theoretical yield in dilute acid hydrolysis(Malester et al., 1992). Because of significant advantages, the kraft process has become established as the world's dominant pulping method. Nonetheless, the process also has some severe shortcomings, principally the low yield from wood, the comparatively high residual lignin content of bleachable grades, and the malodors caused by reduced sulfur compounds.... Most of the earlier modifications were aimed at increased retention of carbohydrates by stabilizing the end groups of the cellulose and hemicellulose polymer chains against "peeling reactions". These reactions cause dissolution of the end groups one unit at a time and consume a significant portion of the cooking chemical. 1, record 36, English, - peeling%20reaction

2, record 36, French, - r%C3%A9action%20de%20dissolution%20des%20monom%C3%A8res%20de%20bouts%20de%20cha%C3%AEne
