The solid carbonaceous material treated ... is preferably a solid particulate residue of a carbonaceous material including coal char, which is essentially bituminous coal char, and coke breeze, 4, record 1, English, - char
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Residual carbon from coal combustion is not the same as activated carbon. The pore structure, surface properties, and inorganic content may be strikingly different. Nonetheless, coal char does have some capacity for adsorbing mercury. 5, record 1, English, - char
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 OBS
[This residue] can be burned for its energy content or, if free from large amounts of impurities, processed further for production of activated carbon for use as a filtering medium. Char produced from coal is generally called coke, while that produced from wood or bone is called charcoal. 3, record 1, English, - char

Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 CONT
7, record 1, French, - produit%20de%20carbonisation
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 OBS
8, record 1, French, - produit%20de%20carbonisation

spouted bed gasifier.... a single-chamber air-fed gasifier operated on a cyclical basis, to yield a high calorific-value gas essentially uncontaminated by carbon dioxide or nitrogen. Wood chips or wood pellets are fed on top of a bed of hot sand in the reactor, and are then mixed by spouting the bed using steam. Some gasification occurs during this phase, but most takes place during the ensuing "cooking" phase during which the bed is static. When the temperature has fallen to a suitably low value air is admitted to burn the char and raise the temperature of the sand to its original value. Wood is then added to begin a new cycle. 1, record 4, English, - spouted%2Dbed%20gasifier

The use of biomass as a feedstock for the production of energy and chemicals has been a popular research topic over the past decade. One of the technologies receiving a great deal of attention is liquefaction in which biomass is converted to oil under high temperatures and pressures. This technology has evolved from a slow, chemical intensive process to a very rapid operation requiring little more than water. Feeling that typical reactor residence times(1-2 hours) were excessive, Beckman developed a small unit capable of reducing heat-up times to less than three minutes. Under these conditions it was found that neither a catalyst nor reducing gas was required. A mixture of only wood and water, when rapidly heated to 350°C, yielded an oil, char and gaseous and aqueous products. 1, record 5, English, - aqueous%20pyrolysis
