WOOD COLUMN [3 records]

Record 1 2024-06-25

English

Subject field(s)
  • Maple Syrup Production
CONT

Each year, tapping for sap collection not only permanently removes a small amount of wood from the taphole itself, but, in addition, the tree's response to the taphole wound generates a ’'stained’’ column of wood extending above and below the taphole that remains permanently nonconductive to sap …

Key term(s)
  • tap hole wound

L'utilisation d'un chalumeau de petit diamètre augmente de façon significative le taux de cicatrisation de la blessure d'entaille même après seulement une saison de croissance.

CONT

When we talk about wood joinery, we are discussing two kinds of joinery : structural joints, finish joints... As an example, in a deck, what are we concerned with joining? 1. column to footing. 2. beam to column. 3. joist to beam. 4. decking to joists. 5. Splicing members and making corners. In any structural joint, we are concerned with transferring loads from one member to another, creating lateral stability, keeping the member in its most effective position.

OBS

structural joint: term officially approved by the Lexicon Project Committee (New Brunswick).

DEF

The separation of e.g., biomass oils or coal fluids through the use of a solvent sequence followed by an analysis by chromatography.

CONT

Farcasiu had already developed SESC (sequential elution by solvents-chromatography) for separating coal fluids into distinct chemical classes. The method seemed even better suited for the separation of biomass oils which, unlike coal products, have no nitrogenous fraction to deal with....

OBS

The original SESC technique required only slight modification for the purpose at hand. Since wood oil is virtually devoid of aliphatic hydrocarbons, the first step, elution with hexane, was omitted. Whatever amount of this fraction, F1, does exist is eluted along with the aromatic hydrocarbons by 15% benzene-hexane in the present technique. This hydrocarbon fraction is designated F1, 2. Also, we have found acetic acid to be superior to pyridine for removing the last wood oil residues from the column.
