WOOD DURABILITY [5 records]

Record 1 2017-04-13

English

Subject field(s)
  • Plant Biology
  • Xylology (The Study of Wood)
CONT

Duraminization is the ultimate process of differentiation of wood cells and leads to the formation of the heartwood or duramen. It is responsible for the principal chemical(durability) and esthetic(color) properties which condition its utilization.

Key term(s)
  • duraminisation

French

Domaine(s)
  • Biologie végétale
  • Xylologie (Étude des bois)
CONT

La duraminisation est l'ultime processus de différenciation des cellules du bois et conduit à la formation du bois de cœur ou duramen. Elle lui confère ses principales propriétés chimiques (durabilité) et esthétiques (coloration) qui conditionneront son utilisation.

  • Restoration of Works of Art (Museums and Heritage)
DEF

[A] process that impregnates paper with an alkaline reserve to neutralize the active acid in the paper substrate and act as a buffer to neutralize acids produced in the future.

CONT

The development of a viable mass deacidification process has long been considered the answer to the problems of conservation in the library field. Acid, inherent in the untreated wood pulp, introduced into the paper in the manufacturing process, or caused from contact with polluted air, breaks the links in the cellulose polymer chains causing the fibers to break down; the paper becomes discolored and brittle, losing both permanence and durability very quickly.... Deacidification does arrest the acid attack and, if adequate buffers are left in the paper, prevents it from recurring, but does not restore embrittled and discolored books to their original state.

OBS

Deacidification lengthens the life expectancy of paper several times its ordinary life.

Key term(s)
  • de-acidification

French

Domaine(s)
  • Chimie
  • Entretien des livres
  • Restauration d'œuvres d'art (Muséologie et Patrimoine)
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Interior Covering Materials
  • Floors and Ceilings
CONT

Magnesite floors. The binder in these "Hand Composition" floors is magnesium oxychloride. This binder is formed in laying the floor, when magnesium oxide is combined with a strong solution of magnesium chloride. Fillers, which are added to this binder, are asbestos, cork, sand, wood flour, marble dust, talc, leather, etc. This great variety of fillers produces magnesite floors having variable porosity, resiliency, appearance and durability.

Record 5 1979-07-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Treatment of Wood
CONT

Wood densification. Wood waste can be dried and pressed into pellets and logs, thereby making transportation more economic than for loose waste, and also rendering the wood more suitable for combustion in certain furnaces. Densification itself is only one step in the process of recovery of energy from wood waste.

OBS

The process of making densified wood consists of filling or closing the voids in the cellular wood structure, accompanied by compression under heat. This process adds hardness, increased strength, greater durability, and dimensional stability.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Traitement des bois
DEF

Action de densifier (le bois).

DEF

Densifier: Augmenter la densité (du bois) en la soumettant à de grandes pressions sur toute sa surface.
