Material and product design incorporating agro-based materials goes beyond applications like thatched roofs, wattle façades and other examples harking back to older days. Its goal is to use proven and new technologies and make such composites that satisfy the demanded functional specifications while containing a high degree of environmental friendliness. The first applications of agro based materials in the building industry may be found in insulation and interior decoration. The Dutch market offers insulation materials based on waste paper(including Isofloc and Isocell). Flax insulation mats are produced in the Netherlands by Eco Fiber. Hemp is another material suitable for insulation mats. Hemp is better resistant to moisture than flax. But as yet there has not been much experience with applications of this material in the building industry. The use of coconut fibers as insulation material offers several benefits such as a low energy content and high insulation value. The material is naturally highly moisture resistant. Insulation materials can be treated with halogen-free cellulose fire retardant. To preserve the material, the fibers can be treated just like wood with boric salt. Another technology is to treat cellulose fibers via the so-called PLATO(Proving Lasting Advanced Timber Option) process. This involves heating the fibers in an autoclave under 14 atmosphere pressure to about 200 degrees Celsius. In this process the lignin and the hemi-cellulose in the fiber chemically react generating a water resistant bakelite-type of resin-compound around the remaining cellulose. 2, record 7, English, - agro%2Dbased%20material

Torrefaction involves heating wood at relatively high temperatures to improve the properties of the wood without the addition of chemicals or toxic substances. The process is different from heat treatment in that it is done in an oxygen-deprived environment to prevent the wood from igniting, which means it is possible to heat the wood to temperatures between 160 °C and 245 °. 1, record 9, English, - torrefaction

2, record 9, French, - torr%C3%A9faction

Most energy sources on Earth are forms of indirect solar energy, although we usually don’t think of them in that way. Coal, oil and natural gas derive from ancient biological material which took its energy from the sun(via plant photosynthesis) millions of years ago. All the energy in wood and foodstuffs also comes from the sun. Movement of the wind(which causes waves at sea), and the evaporation of water to form rainfall which accumulates in rivers and lakes, are also powered by the sun. Therefore, hydroelectric power and wind and wave power are forms of indirect solar energy. Direct solar energy is what we usually mean when we speak of solar power-it is the use of sunlight for heating or generating electricity. 2, record 11, English, - solar%20energy

Dry distillation is the heating of solid materials to produce liquid or gaseous products(which may condense into solids). The method may or may not involve pyrolysis/thermolysis. 4, record 18, French, - r%C3%A9seau%20de%20chauffage%20urbain

Wood-electric hybrid furnaces... are similar in design to a standard wood furnace, but have electric heating elements built into the air stream. As in the wood-oil hybrid furnace, the electric heat system is only activated if the wood furnace cannot meet home heat demand. Wood-electric hybrids are more compact than wood-oil and cost approximately the same. 1, record 37, English, - wood%2Delectric%20hybrid%20furnace

There are many models of wood furnaces available but most householders also want a back-up heating system that will protect their homes if they are absent for extended periods of time. This has led to the increasing popularity of combination or hybrid furnaces, either wood-oil or wood-electric. 1, record 38, English, - back%2Dup%20heating%20system
