Cedar shakes are the ideal roofing material for many areas of the Western United States. A wood roof keeps your house warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. A Meeker shake roof can endure 130 mph winds. In the winter, a Meeker cedar roof will effectively shed snow and ice. Cedar shakes are resistive to thermal shock associated with freeze-thaw conditions. Where fire is a hazard, Meeker cedar shakes optionally treated with FTX are fire retardant for life. 3, record 5, English, - wood%20roof

A common early rural domestic building style was a single room log house, or pen as the architects call it. Often the attic was used as a sleeping loft. As the family grew, a second log house would be built adjacent to the first. The two buildings, or double pens, could be joined by a common roof and a wood floor between the buildings could be added. The space created between the two buildings is called a dogtrot. This breezeway of sorts would, in winter, allow the dogs to get in, out of the rain and snow, or in the summertime, let them find some shade. 5, record 6, English, - breezeway

To arrest the rotting, a soluble compound of seven parts boric acid and three parts of borax was mixed with fresh water and sprayed over the entire hull.... to stabilize the wood and keep it from shrinking and cracking, the ship was sprayed with a solution of polyethylene glycol(PEG) and fresh water. 1, record 7, English, - sprinkler%20system

The boilers are fed wood fuel from the main fuel bin located adjacent to the boiler house. The boilers are the "pile burner" type, which burn wood in a large pile on the floor of a refractory lined furnace box. Combustion efficiency with this type of boiler is generally low but pile burners are simple and therefore relatively inexpensive. Low combustion efficiency also means that emissions such as particulates and carbon monoxide are relatively high. One notable advantage to these systems is that high moisture content fuels can be burned as well as "dirty" fuels containing debris. 3, record 8, English, - pile%20burner
Record number: 8, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Pile burner: Boilers incorporating a pile burning design find applications where the anticipated wood fuel has a high (up to 65%) relative moisture content, as is found in whole green tree chips, bark, and green mill residue. Grates serve to support the fuel, and underfire air flowing up through the grates provides oxygen for combustion, cools the grates, promotes turbulence in the fuel bed, and dries the fuel. The most common form of pile burning is the Dutch oven, which was used almost exclusively during the early part of the century (Guinn and Turner 1990). 4, record 8, English, - pile%20burner

Wind Tower. A handful still exist in most of the region's cities, sometimes on people's homes, and sometimes carefully preserved or reconstructed at museums.... Traditional wind towers rise five or six meters above a house. They are usually built of wood or stone but can also be made from canvas. The tower is open on all four sides and catches even small breezes. The breeze create a low pressure zone which will draw air up from the house causing to create natural ventilation. The towers work amazingly well. Sitting beneath a wind tower even on a hot day you will feel a consistent breeze even when the outside air feels heavy and still. 3, record 12, English, - wind%20tower

Wood shingles, as a rule, are easier to repair than clapboard. You can usually fix those that have split or warped by simply nailing them down with aluminum or galvanized nails. If the shingle is on the exposed side of the house... cut a piece of roofing paper approximately the size of the shingle and slip it underneath the shingle before nailing it down. 3, record 13, English, - wood%20shingle

5, record 14, French, - g%C3%A9n%C3%A9rateur%20d%27air%20chaud%20%C3%A0%20gaz

The woodwork around the room is "grained", as it is throughout the house, to resemble oak. Forced Air Wood Furnaces. Central wood-burning furnaces are controlled by a wall mounted thermostat in the living area. Temperature and fan controls are the same as those found on oil and gas furnaces. Unlike room heaters, which produce a steady heat output by periodic manual adjustments of the draft control, most wood furnaces operate in cycles. A cycle starts with the thermostat sensing that heat is needed in the room where it is located. It signals the furnace control system which opens the combustion air damper and a hot fire develops. When the air inside the furnace's sheet metal casing gets hot, a preset fan control starts the circulating blower and the warm air is moved through the ducts to all areas of the house. 1, record 19, English, - forced%20air%20wood%20furnace
