Deknotting. In a low-yield(i. e., bleachable grade) chemical pulping operation, knots are generally defined as the fraction of pulp that is retained on a 3/8" perforated plate. These rejects are most often composed of irregular shaped reaction wood pieces or overthick chips... Knots are removed from the pulp prior to washing, and are either discarded as waste or returned to the digester infeed.

The planer is a machine for planing or "surfacing" wood by means of a rapidly revolving cutter which chips off the rough surface in many shavings. The piece to be planed is passed over(or under) the revolving cutter by power feed, leaving a smooth or finished surface. The planer is thus used mainly for surfacing flat stock and for reducing stock to a uniform thickness. These machines are available with either one or two cutting heads so that one or both sides of a piece of lumber may be planed in one operation.

Pyrolysis which is accomplished in water.

The use of biomass as a feedstock for the production of energy and chemicals has been a popular research topic over the past decade. One of the technologies receiving a great deal of attention is liquefaction in which biomass is converted to oil under high temperatures and pressures. This technology has evolved from a slow, chemical intensive process to a very rapid operation requiring little more than water. Feeling that typical reactor residence times(1-2 hours) were excessive, Beckman developed a small unit capable of reducing heat-up times to less than three minutes. Under these conditions it was found that neither a catalyst nor reducing gas was required. A mixture of only wood and water, when rapidly heated to 350°C, yielded an oil, char and gaseous and aqueous products.

Blocking knife.... The blade is forged to an iron bar varying in length from 1 to 4 ft. This bar has a hook at one end, and a handle, often T-shaped, at the other. The hook engages with an eye-bolt fixed to a bench or stool to form a hinge. In operation, one hand holds the wood to be shaped, while the other, by moving the knife up and down, pares away the unwanted wood, using the bar as a lever. The longer [size]... is used by cloggers, brush, and by boot-last and boot-tree makers; the smaller sizes are used for shaping rake tines, tent pegs, wooden spoons, etc.

... fiberboards belong to an earlier age(before 1945) when the wet-process manufacturing technique was dominant. In the wet-process technique, the wood is reduced to a coarse, fibrous form. The dry-process technique, used for products such as medium-density fiberboard, reduces the wood to fiber and forms the basic mat by a dry-sifting process. In contrast, the wet-process fiberboards carry the fiber in an aqueous suspension and form the mat, now called a wet lap, by draining the fiber suspension on a screen. The wet lap is then placed in a hot press, which has a screen, like a flyscreen, on the bottom side, permitting escape of the water that is squeezed out of the lap by hydraulic pressure in the press. The screen also permits escape of the steam generated in the final stages of the hot-pressing operation. The resulting product is then called screen-back hardboard, or smooth-one-side(S1S) hardboard.

Les panneaux de fibres bien connus datent d'avant 1945 alors que la méthode par voie humide dominait les autres. Dans la méthode par voie humide, le bois est réduit en fibres grossières, tandis que par voie sèche, méthode employée pour des panneaux à densité moyenne, le bois est réduit en fibres qui forment l'ébauche de fond par feutrage. Dans le procédé par voie humide, les fibres sont amenées au moyen d'une suspension aqueuse pour former une ébauche aujourd'hui appelée "couche humide"; l'ébauche est ensuite égouttée à l'aide d'un tamis. Cette ébauche encore très humide est disposée dans une presse chauffante sur une grille métallique (genre moustiquaire) qui permet l'évacuation de l'eau exprimée mécaniquement une fois cet assemblage introduit dans la presse. Cette grille métallique a également pour avantage de faciliter l'évacuation de la vapeur générée dans les dernières étapes de l'opération de pressage à chaud. Le panneau qui en résulte est appelé (...) panneau de fibres dur lisse sur une face (S1S).
