The central wood furnace is a third alternative to conventional oil, gas or electric heating. Unlike the wood stove, it is a device designed to take on the larger fraction of the home heat load, although a back-up source-for example, an electric plenum heater-will generally be added on... recently developed furnaces use wood chips or pellets rather than firewood, to allow for a much easier distribution and loading of the fuel. 2, record 5, English, - central%20wood%20furnace

Densified Pellet Technology. Pellets are dried ground wood or other biomass waste compressed into small cylinders about 6 mm(1/4 in.) in diameter and 25 mm(1 in.) long. The pressure and heat created during their production binds the pellets together without the need for additives. Pellet-burning appliances include a hopper to hold at least 20 kg of fuel and a screw auger to move the pellets from the hopper into the combustion chamber. Pellets usually burn cleanly because they are fed to the combustion chamber at a controlled rate and are matched with the right amount of combustion air. These appliances are generally able to operate at lower emission levels than natural firewood appliances. 2, record 6, English, - densified%20pellet

spouted bed gasifier.... a single-chamber air-fed gasifier operated on a cyclical basis, to yield a high calorific-value gas essentially uncontaminated by carbon dioxide or nitrogen. Wood chips or wood pellets are fed on top of a bed of hot sand in the reactor, and are then mixed by spouting the bed using steam. Some gasification occurs during this phase, but most takes place during the ensuing "cooking" phase during which the bed is static. When the temperature has fallen to a suitably low value air is admitted to burn the char and raise the temperature of the sand to its original value. Wood is then added to begin a new cycle. 1, record 7, English, - spouted%2Dbed%20gasifier

Research is under way to develop an automatic or self-fueling wood furnace. This system would burn either wood chips, sawdust or densified wood pellets of uniform size. Similar to automatic coal-burning systems, these automatic wood furnaces would draw wood fuel from a storage bin through a motorized fuel auger. A control system would adjust the amount of fuel according to the heating demands of the home. It would require little operating maintenance beyond periodic ash removal and filling of the fuel storage bin. 1, record 8, English, - automatic%20wood%20furnace

Wood densification. Wood waste can be dried and pressed into pellets and logs, thereby making transportation more economic than for loose waste, and also rendering the wood more suitable for combustion in certain furnaces. Densification itself is only one step in the process of recovery of energy from wood waste. 1, record 9, English, - wood%20densification
