1, record 6, French, - %C3%A9limination%20des%20n%26oelig%3Buds

Record number: 16, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The development of a viable mass deacidification process has long been considered the answer to the problems of conservation in the library field. Acid, inherent in the untreated wood pulp, introduced into the paper in the manufacturing process, or caused from contact with polluted air, breaks the links in the cellulose polymer chains causing the fibers to break down; the paper becomes discolored and brittle, losing both permanence and durability very quickly.... Deacidification does arrest the acid attack and, if adequate buffers are left in the paper, prevents it from recurring, but does not restore embrittled and discolored books to their original state. 3, record 16, English, - deacidification

Because of significant advantages, the kraft process has become established as the world's dominant pulping method. Nonetheless, the process also has some severe shortcomings.... Two add-on technologies date from pre-1970, the polysulfide process(used commercially on a limited basis) and the H2S pretreatment process(demonstrated at the pilot plant level). Both methods are successful in providing significant increases in pulp yield, up to 7 % on dry wood. Unfortunately, both methods are associated with increased concentration of sulfur in the chemical cycle, which exacerbates the odor problem. Additionally, both methods require further processing steps that increase the capital and operating costs of the pulp mill. 1, record 31, English, - H2S%20pretreatment

2, record 31, French, - pr%C3%A9traitement%20au%20H2S

Wood processing waste : The forestry industry harvests and collects wood for two major ends : fiber for pulp(and eventually paper) and for chip board and the stronger oriented strand board(OSB), as well as lumber for the construction industry.... There is, however, a fairly significant portion of the timber that is transported to mills that goes to waste : cut-ends, sawdust, rejected wood that is too warped, pulp batches that are unsaleable.... Color removal. The brown color of pulp mill effluents originates with the wood handling, chemical pulping and bleaching operations, and is due to the presence of tannin and lignin derivatives. These compounds are slow to biodegrade and are usually little affected by conventional secondary treatment methods. Changes in plant design(e. g., elimination of wet debarking, bleach process modifications) have been successful in lowering effluent color, but the problem remains serious in situations where the dilution factor in the receiving water is low. 1, record 99, English, - color%20removal

1, record 99, French, - suppression%20de%20la%20couleur

Color removal. The brown color of pulp mill effluents originates with the wood handling, chemical pulping and bleaching operations, and is due to the presence of tannin and lignin derivatives.... Coagulation processes are now preferentially applied to wastewaters following secondary treatment because of more complete color removal. It has also been found that the biological process itself causes the formation of additional color. The rapid infiltration process appears to be a good choice for color removal at mill sites with suitable topography and subsoil characteristics. In this method, the wastewater is percolated through porous subsoil strata before reaching the receiving water. The color is removed by adsorption and precipitation onto soil particles. Because the soil strata becomes rather rapidly saturated, it is necessary to operate a number of basins intermittently, allowing time between dosages for regeneration of the adsorbing surfaces. 1, record 100, English, - rapid%20infiltration%20process

1, record 100, French, - infiltration%20rapide
