Purfling is a thin, double strip of wood that is inlaid into the edge of the top and back of the instrument. This may appear to be ornamental but, in fact, it serves two purposes. Structurally, purfling acts as reinforcement for the edges of the instrument preventing any severe damage from occurring at the upper and lower plates, should the edge suffer a blow. Acoustically, the groove that is cut into the plates acts as an interruption to the vibrations that are traveling through the wood. 2, record 1, English, - purfling

Blind tacking is used for the same purpose as blind sewing. That is to create a finished covering without any signs of tacks or staples. It is used in places where blind sewing cannot be done as along the edges of exposed wood. There are two kinds of blind tacking used in upholstery work. Both use cardboard strips and tacks but the ways in which the two are applied differ. The "slab method" forms pottery from flat pieces of clay. The potter shapes the clay into flat slabs by pounding it with the fist or by flattening it with a rolling pin.
