Torrefaction involves heating wood at relatively high temperatures to improve the properties of the wood without the addition of chemicals or toxic substances. The process is different from heat treatment in that it is done in an oxygen-deprived environment to prevent the wood from igniting, which means it is possible to heat the wood to temperatures between 160 °C and 245 °. 1, record 13, English, - torrefaction

2, record 13, French, - torr%C3%A9faction

Fire-curing is done in barns in which an open wood fire on the dirt floor gives off smoke which circulates among the hanging leaves, giving it a characteristic creosote aroma over 3 to 10 weeks treatment; burning aromatic wood, such as cedar in Syria gives the tobacco a distinctive fragrance. 2, record 14, English, - fire%2Dcuring

Fixed bed reactors. In fixed bed fermenters, the cells are immobilized by absorption on or entrapment in solid, non-moving solid surfaces. In one type of fixed bed fermenter, the cells are immobilized on the surfaces of immobile solid particles such as plastic blocks, concrete blocks, wood shavings or fibrous material such as plastic or glass wool. The liquid feed is either pumped through or allowed to trickle over the surface of the solids where the immobilized cells convert the substrates into products. Once steady state has been reached there will be a continuous cell loss from the solid surfaces. These types of fermenters are widely used in waste treatment and as biological filters in small aquarium water recycling systems. 1, record 29, English, - fixed%20bed

The sand and gravel were carefully washed from the interior of the scoop, and the wood surface was cleaned with an ultrasonic dental scaler and soft brushes. The PEGcon method(which employs software developed jointly by Parks Canada and CCI) was used to evaluate the condition of the wood and to calculate suitable polyethylene glycol(PEG) solutions for treatment. Oxygen delignification is an established technology as a stage placed between the pulping digesters and the bleach plant to remove up to half of the residual lignin in the brown stock without damaging the strength properties of the pulp. The remaining lignin is best removed by the conventional chlorine bleaching methods, but using less chlorine based chemicals which reduces the pollution problems caused by the chlorinated organic compounds in the effluent. Magnesium may be added to protect the cellulose from degradation during oxygen delignification. 3, record 39, English, - oxygen%20delignification

Color removal. The brown color of pulp mill effluents originates with the wood handling, chemical pulping and bleaching operations, and is due to the presence of tannin and lignin derivatives. These compounds are slow to biodegrade and are usually little affected by conventional secondary treatment methods. Changes in plant design(e. g., elimination of wet debarking, bleach process modifications) have been successful in lowering effluent color, but the problem remains serious in situations where the dilution factor in the receiving water is low. 1, record 41, English, - color%20removal

1, record 41, French, - suppression%20de%20la%20couleur

Color removal. The brown color of pulp mill effluents originates with the wood handling, chemical pulping and bleaching operations, and is due to the presence of tannin and lignin derivatives.... Coagulation processes are now preferentially applied to wastewaters following secondary treatment because of more complete color removal. It has also been found that the biological process itself causes the formation of additional color. The rapid infiltration process appears to be a good choice for color removal at mill sites with suitable topography and subsoil characteristics. In this method, the wastewater is percolated through porous subsoil strata before reaching the receiving water. The color is removed by adsorption and precipitation onto soil particles. Because the soil strata becomes rather rapidly saturated, it is necessary to operate a number of basins intermittently, allowing time between dosages for regeneration of the adsorbing surfaces. 1, record 42, English, - rapid%20infiltration%20process
