Les peintures ignifuges modifient les propriétés de surface des matériaux en leur permettant d'améliorer leur comportement au feu. Pour aller plus loin dans le domaine de la protection contre l'incendie, il fallait obtenir pour la peinture des propriétés d'isolation thermique. Or, l'épaisseur de 1 mm en peinture est d'une part un maximum techniquement acceptable et d'autre part insuffisante pour assurer l'isolation thermique efficace. (...) Les peintures intumescentes s'expansent sous l'action de la chaleur en formant une mousse carbonisée isolante de plusieurs centimètres d'épaisseur. Cette meringue multicellulaire, agissant par isolation thermique, limite l'extension d'un feu en empêchant l'inflammation des matériaux combustibles tout en retardant la destruction de son support.
