Related to the lute, the mandolin is a small stringed instrument constructed of wood. Its eight wire strings are tuned in pairs to the same notes as those of a violin. The distinctive tremolo sound of the mandolin is created by quick movements of the plectrum(pick) across the four courses, or pairs, of strings. Although the 18th-century instrument was built in several varieties in different Italian towns, the mandolins built in Naples eventually became the representative type now known as the Neapolitan mandolin. The ribbed, pear-shaped body of the Neapolitan mandolin is attached to a neck containing a fingerboard, usually with 17 frets. The strings are hitched to the bottom of the instrument's body, then pass over a bridge and are tuned at the top of the neck. 3, record 2, English, - Neapolitan%20mandolin

The mandolin appears to have descended from the medieval gittern in Italy, where it took two forms. Harps first appeared around 3000 B. C. [before Christ] in Mesopotamia and Iran. They were arched harps, probably developed from hunter's bows, and the body was made of one piece of wood. A thousand years, later, around 2000 B. C., a new type was conceived when two pieces of wood were joined at right angle, one drilled into the other. The result was the angular harp... Harp designers waited millennia before taking the next logical step : connecting the two extreme ends of the angular harp with a long rigid pillar. When they did,..., it became the frame harp(also known as the "pillar harp"), a more rigid structure that allows higher string tension and more strings. 2, record 3, English, - frame%20harp

A type of pattern used in foundry-work for large castings, where a full pattern would require a very large amount of timber. The pattern is a ribbed construction, in wood, and where a separate core is to be made the ribs are arranged transversely. The spaces between the ribs are filled with sand by the moulder, who thus builds up an improvised full pattern. This is then sprinkled with parting powder and used in moulding. 2, record 14, English, - skeleton%20pattern

Most vinyl roofing membranes are sealed using hot air, which can be compared to welding metal. The process joins two rolls of membranes at the overlap areas (without using another dissimilar material) to create one monolithic layer that covers the entire roof. The heat-welded, permanently fused seams on vinyl roofing membrane form a watertight seal, and their peel strength can be critical to the roof system’s long-term performance against wind forces. 3, record 25, English, - monolithic%20layer

ROOF technology allows old roof membrane to be renewed without removal. ROOF technology is based upon a thermochemical treatment of bitumen roof coating. With heat applied to a section of roof coating bitumen and bituminiferous mastics start melting. Imbued with own bitumen, roof coating gains improved waterproofing capabilities. Every novice knows the wigwam fire--indeed if a child who has never made a fire were told to build one, he would surely turn up with a wigwam, for it is the natural arrangement. But nevertheless, it is not without importance in the craft, for it is the core of every fire lay no matter how elaborate. Viewed in its own right and aside from its contribution as the starting torch of other lays, it has few qualifications as a cooking fire if one intends to do more than stew a pot of tea, because its heat is all thrown to the center of the pyramid and offers no spread for the utensils, and its coals all drop to one small spot in the center. It is good for light, however, and is prized in the evening. First the coil of birch-bark, or the chip of fat pine, or the handful of tiny twigs broken into a pyramid, or the fuzz-stick; then a few softwood sticks from the size of a pencil up to that of your little finger, stacked around it in wigwam fashion, and lastly the hardwood sticks of finger and thumb size.

3, record 27, French, - feu%20en%20c%C3%B4ne

The head of the stick can be constructed from a number of different materials, though felt wrapped around a wood core is the most common. Other core materials include felt and cork, and other wrap materials include leather. Sticks can also have exposed wood heads. The boilers are fed wood fuel from the main fuel bin located adjacent to the boiler house. The boilers are the "pile burner" type, which burn wood in a large pile on the floor of a refractory lined furnace box. Combustion efficiency with this type of boiler is generally low but pile burners are simple and therefore relatively inexpensive. Low combustion efficiency also means that emissions such as particulates and carbon monoxide are relatively high. One notable advantage to these systems is that high moisture content fuels can be burned as well as "dirty" fuels containing debris. 3, record 38, English, - pile%20burner
Record number: 38, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Pile burner: Boilers incorporating a pile burning design find applications where the anticipated wood fuel has a high (up to 65%) relative moisture content, as is found in whole green tree chips, bark, and green mill residue. Grates serve to support the fuel, and underfire air flowing up through the grates provides oxygen for combustion, cools the grates, promotes turbulence in the fuel bed, and dries the fuel. The most common form of pile burning is the Dutch oven, which was used almost exclusively during the early part of the century (Guinn and Turner 1990). 4, record 38, English, - pile%20burner

Fixed bed reactors. In fixed bed fermenters, the cells are immobilized by absorption on or entrapment in solid, non-moving solid surfaces. In one type of fixed bed fermenter, the cells are immobilized on the surfaces of immobile solid particles such as plastic blocks, concrete blocks, wood shavings or fibrous material such as plastic or glass wool. The liquid feed is either pumped through or allowed to trickle over the surface of the solids where the immobilized cells convert the substrates into products. Once steady state has been reached there will be a continuous cell loss from the solid surfaces. These types of fermenters are widely used in waste treatment and as biological filters in small aquarium water recycling systems. 1, record 56, English, - fixed%20bed

By Fuel Used. Boilers may be designed to burn coal, wood, various grades of fuel oil, various types of fuel gas, or to operate as electric boilers. A boiler designed for one specific fuel type may not be convertible to another type of fuel. Some boiler designs can be adapted to burn coal, oil or gas. Several designs allow firing with oil or gas by burner conversion or by using a dual fuel burner.... Efficiency of fuel burning boilers is defined in two ways : combustion efficiency and overall efficiency. Electric boilers are, of course, nearly 100% efficient in transferring heat within the boiler. 1, record 81, English, - fuel%20burning%20boiler
