The use of symbols to designate gage was displaced by the use of base weights (or basis weights) expressed in pounds per base box that also indicated the approximate thickness of the tin-mill product ... With the recent introduction of the metric system (SI) in production, gage is the basic unit for specification and area becomes only a derived value for commercial usage.

Tinplate sheets used to manufacture cans and boxes were originally packed into wooden boxes in order to protect the polished tin surface. Sheets cut to 35 cm X 50 cm(14 X 20 in) and of 0. 3 mm thickness weighed approx. 454 g(1 lb) and 112 were packed into a box, known as the "basis box". Variation in thickness of sheet cut to the same size would vary the weight, and larger sizes were made, although these were then called "tinned sheets". Modern production techniques favour reeling into rools for shipment, and protection with interleaving of paper or plastic where necessary.

A saltbox is a building with a long, pitched roof that slopes down to the back, generally a wooden frame house. A saltbox has just one story in the back and two stories in the front. The flat front and central chimney are recognizable features, but the asymmetry of the unequal sides and the long, low rear roof line are the most distinctive features of a saltbox, which takes its name from its resemblance to a wooden lidded box in which salt was once kept.

More a building shape than a building style, the saltbox takes its name from a sloping gable roof that gives the house the shape of a wooden box used to store salt in Colonial times, like the reproduction of a 1770s saltbox by Replitiques. The saltbox house is formed by a one-story addition across the rear of a 1-1/2 or 2-story building. Initially an easy method of enlarging a house, it eventually became an accepted building form, particularly in New England after 1680. The style was common in New England before 1830, and it remained popular in other parts of the country until the late 1800s. A variation of early Colonial or Cape Cod style houses, the practical and simple saltbox was often a single room deep. Given that often a dozen or more people crowded into these early homes, colonists soon began looking for practical ways to expand living space.

Type of louvered instrument shelter used mainly for the dry-bulb, wet-bulb maximum and minimum thermometers.

Standard instrument shelter(called a Stevenson Screen) used by NSSL [National Severe Storms Laboratory]. Shelter houses temperature, pressure, and relative humidity instruments. Observer comes to shelter to take readings. The shelter is a wooden box painted white with double-louvered sides. It is mounted on a stand 4 feet above the ground.

Where you put the thermometers is important, too. They need exposure to the airflow, but also have to be sheltered from solar heating. The solution : the Cotton Region Shelter. This instrument shelter, sometimes called a Stevenson Shelter, is a slatted, white wooden box 30 inches by 20 inches, with a door which opens to the north.

The boxcar has a doorway on each side at the centre of the car; the doorways are approximately 1. 8 metres wide and cover the full height of the box. Before loading, the doorways are covered to the height the grain will be loaded by applying a cardboard or wooden lining(called a grain door) across the door opening and inside the permanent car door. The cardboard or wooden liners are supplied at loading stations by the railways and are applied by elevator company personnel. This procedure is known as coopering.
